The Officeis arguably one of the greatest sitcoms to grace network television with the Steve Carell-led American adaptation receiving critical acclaim. The show become a major ratings hit within its first four seasons. However, when it was given a new time slot during its fifth season, the series saw potential to attract new viewers.
The two-part season 5 episodeStress Relief, aired right afterSuper Bowl XLIII, creating an avenue for the sitcom to garner fresh eyeballs. As a result, the series included multiple ambitious gags and stunts to grab new viewers. In the process, one expensive stunt left Angela Kinsey petrified despite the episode becoming one of the best in the show’s history.

ActressAngela Kinseyis best known for playing the role of Angela Martin inthe US version ofThe Office. In the season 5 episodeStress Relief, Kinsey was part of a stunt that involved Angela’s cat, Bandit. When the stunt could not be performed using trained cats, a puppet had to be created.
OnThe Office Ladiespodcast, Kinsey reflected on the stunt and admitted that she was terrified of the cat puppet created for the stunt sequence which required a cat to be thrown up and down a ceiling. However, Kinsey revealed that the latter part would’ve been traumatizing for a real cat, leading to the use of a puppet.
I want you to know that thing was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen, held or touched.
Kinsey made the above statement, explaining that the puppet was scary and described it as gelatinous with yellow eyes.

Furthermore, the actress revealed she was so scared of the puppet that she had to cover its face with paper between takes. According to Andy Greene’s bookThe Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s(via/Film), the fake cat allegedly cost $12,000, making the stunt one of the most audacious ones in the show.

Stress Relieforiginally aired on August 09, 2025, and had the challenge of following up on that year’sSuper Bowlbroadcast. However, creatorGreg Danielssaw this as an opportunity to attract new viewers and instructed the creative team to make a stand-alone episode.
He was like, “Look, this is our opportunity to sort of re-pilot the show and introduce a whole new group of people to ‘The Office.’ It’s very important to have a really grabby opening.“
Producer Halsted Sullivan made the above statement in Greene’s book, recalling the instructions the team received from Daniels for the episode.
