Square EnixandAcquireshared a new development update on theOctopath Travelersequel on consoles, via this week’sFamitsumagazine.
As we get closer to the release ofOctopath Traveler Champions of the Continentin Japan on October 28, this week’s Famitsu magazine (officially titled Weekly Famitsu Magazine July 21, 2025 Issue) included an interview with the game’s staff.
Octopath Traveler Tairiku no Hasha, which can be translated toChampions of the Continent,is a prequel to the original, and is a single player full fledged JRPG experience, despite being on Mobile and having gacha elements. It’ll even have an actual ending at launch. We translatedhere most of the interview, focusing on the prequel. The producers also brought up thedevelopment hurdlesBravely Default 2faced.
Back when this prequel was first announced in March 2019, developing studio Acquire mentioned it’s also working on anewOctopath Travelerconsole game. And how we should play this mobile game as we wait for it. The Famitsu interview, with Tomoya Asano, Planning, Producer, and Yuuki Yokoyama, Producer, both at Square Enix, included new comments regarding this sequel. Tomoya Asano said it’ll take a little while more until we get news about it.
Tomoya Asano:“I’m looking forward to playingTairiku no Hashamyself at launch. As for the nextOctopath Travelerconsole game we mentioned in the past, it looks like it’ll take a little while until we can reveal more information. Sorry about this. For now, I would be grateful if our console games fans would check out the upcomingBravely Default II.”
Nothing was revealed about theOctopath Travelersequel besides its existence, so we don’t know what kind of name the game will have. Whether it’ll beOctopath Traveler 2or something else. Moreover, I’m calling it a sequel for convenience, but it wasn’t confirmed to be a sequel, and so far Square Enix only said it’s a “newOctopath Travelerconsole game”.
Personally speaking I have high hopes for the nextOctopathconsole game. Hoping it’ll have an even cooler battle system, and fix flaws like the unequal quality of the protagonists' stories and the incredibly boringly designed maps the original game dares to calls “dungeons”. I’ll definitely be trying outTairiku no Hashaas well and see how it compares to the original.
Octopath Traveler Tairiku no Hashawas only announced in Japan. However,Square Enix teased an English version. The originalOctopath Travelershipped over 2 million copies too.
