Ocean’s 12is a sequel to 2001’sOcean’s 11, a reboot of the 1960 film of the same name. The film continues the story of George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Danny Ocean and Robert “Rusty” Ryan as they undertake a new heist plan. However, the film almost included two iconic actors whose characters would have had major ramifications for the duo.

According to the reboot’s writer, Ted Griffin, actors Robert Redford and Paul Newman were considered for roles in the sequels. However, what is more surprising than their inclusion is why the idea did not come to fruition. Here is everything you need to know about Robert Redford and Paul Newman’s proposed roles inOcean’s 12.
Ocean’s 12Writer Wanted to Add Robert Redford and Paul Newman in Surprising Roles

Writer Ted Griffin, who penned the reboot, did not return for the sequel. However, that did not stop Griffin from bouncing around ideas for a second installment, including one version starringRobert RedfordandPaul Newman.

During an appearance on theScript Apartpodcast, Griffin revealed his original idea for the sequel, which would have featured Redford and Newman as the fathers of Clooney and Pitt’s characters and new additions to the core team.

The concept of casting Redford and Newman as veteran conmen in the movie was most likely inspired by the duo’s 1973 heist filmThe Sting, which features them as two professional grifters trying to con a mob boss. As a result, Redford and Newman would’ve felt at home in theOcean’suniverse.
Ted Griffin Explained Why Robert Redford and Paul Newman Weren’t Included inOcean’s 12
While the prospect of seeing Redford and Newman in the sequel was certainly exciting, it ultimately did not materialize. In the same podcast, Griffin revealed that the idea was scrapped very early on and did not even make it to the sequel’s scripting stage.
Someone involved in the movie had a very bad relationship with one of those two men, and told me, ‘Nah, it’s not going to work out.’

Griffin stated the above, implying that one of the two veteran actors was on bad terms with someone involved in the sequel’s production. However, Griffin did not specify whether it was one of the lead actors or someone working behind the scenes.
