New details about theNintendo Switch 2have been revealed in an FCC filing, including whether it will be compatible with the Amiibo figures that have been around since the 3DS/Wii U generation.

There was a time whenNintendo was big on Amiibotoys, which were plastic figures containing NFC chips that connected to games. TheSuper Smash Bros.series was easily the most supported, with every fighter getting their own figure, culminating in Sora being released in 2024.

The main reason why Amiibos are sticking around could be due to theSwitch being backward compatiblewith nearly the entire Switch library. Many of those games had content locked behind Amiibos, so it makes sense that Nintendo would want to keep them around.

It’s also possible that Nintendo wants to keep producing them for the bigger titles. While not all first-partyNintendo games received Amiibos, a few have, such asThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Chances are, the fate of Amiibos will be revealed during theApril 2025 Nintendo Direct. If they have a place in the upcoming generation of games, then they should appear in the first major outing of the Switch 2.
