A role-played ecological report from what’s known as the Pokémon World Ecological Society recently revealed another newPokémonfor the upcomingPokémon Scarlet and Violetgames, and it’s a beach-dwelling little guy called Wiglett. But no, it’s not what you think. This Pokémon hasnothingto do with Diglett, as was explained by the reporters in the video, which was clipped and shared bySerebii. They were confused at first, but Paldean researchers affirmed that though it looks like a regional form of Diglett, it’s actually its own separate Pokémon that just happens to look similar.

This concept was leaked andreported ona couple of months ago, as well as the fact one of the Pokémon would be based off of Diglett. They are colloquially known as ‘convergent species’ or ‘regional fakes’, and they’re essentially just another way for the developers to make re-designs of their Pokémon. The idea is said to come from the concept of ‘Convergent Evolution’ in real-life biology, where totally different species adopt similar traits as they evolve.

It’s unclear why Game Freak, the devs, are choosing to divide their re-designs into different branches like this. As revealed inAugust’s Pokemon Presents showcase, Scarlet and Violet will still have the standard regional forms, such as Paldean Wooper, who is Poison/Ground type. That being the case, there’s no reason why this obvious Diglett variant had to be designated to another concept when it could just as easily have been a Paldean regional form.

The reasons given by the fictional reporters were that they “live and eat differently” and that the original Diglett would never go near the water. Keep in mind that the original Sandslash is a Ground-type Pokémon that’s known for digging whose regional variant is Ice/Steel. The same insiders who leaked this Diglett variant also claimed that Tentacool, the first-generation Water/Poison type, will be getting a ‘regional fake’ as well, which is going to Grass/Ground type. Though the fake report doesn’t confirm Wiglett’s typing, leakers claim he will be a Pure Water type.

There’s yet another leaked version of regional forms that has yet to receive any official confirmation, though this one’s at least more justified. Currently referred to as ‘Paradox’ Pokémon, Scarlet and Violet will have two branches of variations respective to each version. Matching the theme of the future and the past, Scarlet will have ancient variations of existing Pokémon, while Violet will have future variations. Like the convergent species, these will have their own name and Pokedex number. Though it hasn’t been confirmed, Cyclizar, and its similarities to the cover Pokémon, Miraidon and Koraidon, strongly suggest this is true.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release on August 09, 2025, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
