The most recent trailer forPokémon Scarlet & Violetfeatured the POV perspective of a Naranja Academy trainer as they find a new Ghost-typePokémonin the wilderness of Paldea. It is a cute little lap-dog-looking creature with long hair that covers its eyes and a lit candle at the top of its head, and though it seems nothing but friendly in the video, there’s a clear implication that it hides some nefarious power behind its adorable appearance.RELATED:Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Previews Warn Of Subpar PerformanceThis trailer was advertised yesterday via another ‘found footage’ clip that showed the start of this trainer’s journey, when she was walking through an open plain in the daytime, with the caption “Ghost-type Pokémon in Paldea?!”. Today’s trailer clearly follows up later in their trek at nighttime, where they run into a Mimikyu, then a Gengar, and finally the mysterious doggie that will make its first appearance in Scarlet & Violet.

Though the trailer was purposefully cryptic, more information was relayed viaPokemon’s official Twitter account. It’s called Greavard, the Ghost Dog Pokémon, and thankfully, it doesn’t have any bad intentions. The description reads that it’s so loving that paying it any attention results in it following you wherever you go. However, “Greavard will slowly and inadvertently absorb the life-force of those around it.” A morbid description, though that’s not uncommon for Ghost-type Pokémon.

The post came with another trailer that featured how Greavard looks in-game and showed a few snippets of it in battle. This trailer revealed that Greavard is pure Ghost-type, though we’ll have to wait and see if this changes for its evolution, if it has one at all. It also showcased the tendency Greavards have to bury themselves into the ground so that only the candle at the top of their head is visible. It could be that this is how this Pokémon will appear in the wild and will surprise players as its bursts from the ground, much like in the first video.

Many fans pointed out its similarity to Litwick, the Ghost/Fire-type ‘Candle Pokémon’ from Generation V that evolves into Chandelure. Some speculated that this Pokémon could have been an unusually diverting regional variant of Litwick, but it is now clear that this is not the case. Pokémon has been on a tear lately, having just revealed a new Pokémon calledBelliboltless than two weeks ago.
