Need for Speed: Undergroundremains one of the high watermarks of the long-running franchise. Personally, I’ve always preferred the sequel, but both games are excellent. And, while last year’sNFS: Heatwasdecent, it failed to stand out from better racers likeForza Horizon 4. Taking the series back to the streets ofUndergroundmight be exactly what this franchise needs.
So, ifCriterionis going to do something related toUnderground, the question becomes which direction will they go? A remake or remaster probably makes the most sense. As I mentioned above, those original two games are beloved by the community. EA could easily make bank just selling on nostalgia.
However, with a new console generation on the way, they could be looking at anUnderground 3. Of course, that brings some big risks. You don’t just invoke theUndergroundname and put out another basic racer. They’d really have to go for it. Considering they haven’t been able to commit to a direction for a while, that sounds like a big ask.
We should know more after today’s EA Play event. It kicks off at 4 PM PST. We’ll bestreaming our live reactionsto the show, so be sure to check that out on our YouTube channel.
