Christian Gyrling, Vice President ofNaughty Dog, has elaborated on the studios current progress and vision for their PC ports in a recent PlayStationblog post. When discussing why olderUnchartedtitles weren’t brought to PC first, Gyrling said that the games would require a “major overhaul” to stand up to modern PC releases and player expectations, unlike Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy.

When discussing the thought process behind bringing Uncharted games to PC, Naughty Dog’s VP said that fans “may be wondering why [they] didn’t start with the original Uncharted”, to which he answered, stating the studio “felt that, while Nathan Drake’s first three adventures from the PlayStation 3 console still stand the test of time narratively, they would require a major overhaul visually to stand-up to modern PC releases and the expectations players may have”.

Ensuring maximum quality for PC players required attention to the broader choices made available by that platform, such as more cinematic resolutions and specific PC graphical features like ultra-wide monitor support. Other minor tweaks were implemented, such as adding black bars for cinematics to preserve the original artistic intent. Various game segments were also reworked to support other peripherals like keyboard and mouse, and not just the DualShock controller.

Loading times can be viewed as a relic of the past for most modern games now, especially on PC hardware. So the studio took some time to adjust the transition between screens as well to ensure the smoothest experience for PC gamers. In short, it is not only about compatibility with modern hardware, but with preserving the original experience during every single step, while embracing the modernity of the presentation.

Gyrling stresses that the PlayStation 5 will continue to be the main focus of the studio’s attention, but now they are more oriented to the option of a PC port if the need arises. Having set the stage for a new player base with their recent port, they promise that their upcoming PC releases will be indistinguishable in performance and quality from their console counterparts.
