One of the biggest criticisms associated withNarutois its poorly-written female characters. Here, bad writing is an understatement when it comes to side characters. Despite its rich lore, Kishimoto failed to add substance to female characters.

Besides Sakura and Tenten, the mangaka majorly failed Kurenai in more ways than one. Throughout the series, she was reduced to a glaring stereotype.

Decades after the premiere, fanatics have a lot to say about her character. While most internet users objectify her, others criticize Kishimoto’s portrayal of her character.

Amidst all this, the mangaka highlighted Konoha’s role in failing its ninja. This also includes Kurenai along with several other jonin who sacrificed it all for warped notions of glory.

Kurenai’s vilification in Masashi Kishimoto’s series

Writing female characters isn’tMasashi Kishimoto’sbest suit. But the mangaka failed immensely in his characterization of women in the ninjaverse. While fans have bashed Sakura for decades, they didn’t hold back in Kurenai’s case either.

Among the side characters sidelined by Kishimoto, Kurenai’s fate is nothing short of miserable. This is especially true with her genjutsu prowess and intelligence. None of these are fleshed out in the anime. Rather, her character is reduced to an embarrassment.

Despite her genjutsu mastery, her character is grossly nerfed. Rather, the anime showcased some of the most nonsensical moments. From her defeat at Itachi’s hands to her being stuck in vines, she was reduced to a caricature.

To add salt to the wound, Kishimoto’s misrepresentationtriggered sexismand misogyny among the fans. This was majorly after her brief stint in the series and sequel which either objectified her or stereotyped her. The hate for her character is incessant in more ways than one.

When asked about her contributions,Redditors’ responseswere nothing short of sexist and misogynistic.

From golddigger to stay-at-home mom, fans’ vilification of Kurenai reflects the mangaka’s disservice to the character. Among the comments, some sensible fans pointed to his bad writing. While this is a case of bad writing, there’s more to it.

‘Guy probably thought she was being polite’: Kishimoto Can’t Write Love Stories, but Naruto and Hinata Were Scarily Realistic in the Series

In all honesty, Konoha failed her immensely along with other characters in the series. As a reputed jonin, the village could have utilized her strengths. But it all boils down to the village’s flaws and failures.

Konoha, the failed and flawed village inNaruto

The will of fire is something thatKonohaprides on. It is that virtue that fuels the shinobi to carry out perilous journeys. Throughout the series, Leaf Village partook in questionable decisions be it Chunin Exams or Genin Missions.

Additionally, the village let several crimes go unpunished. From Danzo’s secret organization to Orochimaru’s experiments, the village led to its downfall. But it all started ages ago with Leaf’s involvement in atrocities and crimes.

Sakumo Hatake’s murder ofSasori’s parentsis one such case. His abandonment by the leaf village despite his duty and loyalty cost him his life. Moreover, his suicide mentally scarred his son for decades to come. Moreover, Leaf’s inability to intervene in missions also led to Rin losing her life.

The village has a series of failures that are overshadowed by the flawed idea of the Will of Fire. Above all, the village’s ostracization of Uchihas and Jinchuriki was truly distasteful. In Kurenai’s case, Kishimoto failed to salvage her character inBoruto.

In retrospect, Kurenai’s brilliance deserved to be outlined and fleshed out. Not only did the mangaka fail her character, but his portrayal led to a barrage of hate and misogyny among fans.

Narutois available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Viz Media.
