When we say the words ‘thespian’ and ‘veteran’, the image of Patrick Stewart immediately comes to mind. The British star who has had a glittering career from stage to screen spanning many decades, has been the face of many iconic franchises in Hollywood. In particular, he became synonymous with the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard inStar Trek: Picard, and Professor Xavier in theX-Menfilms.

But the journey to the top has been anything but a bed of roses for the actor. In his tell-all memoir, Stewart speaks about his rise to fame while also talking in detail about his tough childhood that saw him having a complicated relationship with his father. The celebrity recalled one particularly humiliating incident when he received brutal treatment from his dad in public.
Patrick Stewart Cannot Live Down This Incident From His Childhood
Looking at Patrick Stewart and the pride of place he assumes in the film industry, it is difficult to imagine that the star’s path to glory was paved with many obstacles. TheX-Menactor in his memoir titledMaking it So, revealed many challenging moments in his childhood, having grown up poor.
A significant part of the book deals with his complex relationship with his father who was away serving the country in the army during most of his growing years. When he returned, he found that adjusting to civilian life and finding menial jobs to support the family took a huge toll on him mentally and emotionally.

In the memoir (viaThe Print) theStar Trekactor addressed an incident which resulted in him being humiliated in public by his father. During an outing, the family stopped at a fruit and vegetable shop where Stewart Sr. made his son close his eyes and dropped something on his hands. Fearing the object to be some kind of creature, the actor instinctively threw it down to the floor in fear.

The object which turned out to be a peach, led to Stewart’s father getting livid as his son did not react the way he expected him to. Instead of being curious about the fruit and wanting to taste it, the star’s actions ended up infuriating his dad, which then led to him being openly slapped in the face in front of a bunch of onlookers.
My father was furious. With an open hand, he delivered a heavy slap to my head. The promenade was busy, and many people saw him strike me. No one intervened, though

While theJeffreyactor was not seriously hurt physically, the impact that this incident had on him mentally, would stay with him for a long time to come.
Patrick Stewart Was Deeply Ashamed Of His Bullying Days
Patrick Stewart’sProfessor Xavier in theX-Menfilms, is someone who works tirelessly for the protection of mutants while also striving to create a world where humans and mutants co-exist peacefully. But in real life, it was a young Stewart who needed a Professor X-like figure to guide him while growing up poor in a rough neighbourhood.
The actor in his memoirMaking It So(viaThe Print), confessed that he was a bully, as this was the only way to survive amongst other children who would otherwise dominate him if he showed even a small sliver of weakness. Narrating a particularly harrowing bullying incident in which he was one of the perpetrators, he wrote,

There was a lad in our class who had a deformed hand: a small lump of skin and bone with tiny stubs for fingers, and only three of them. We would surround him and threaten him with violence if he didn’t hammer his hand against the stone wall until it was bloody, just for our cruel amusement.

This is also extremely ironic as Stewart himself went on to play a wheelchair-bound character in Professor Xavier in theX-Men. He looked back at this episode with a lot of regret and shame, and stated that he was deeply saddened that he was once a boy who chose this path to protect himself.
