Among the many indie games shown off in theKinda Funny Showcase,Lucifer Within Usfrom Kitfox Games made a compelling pitch for its spooky premise. Players will take the role of a “digital exorcist,” purifying the possessed and trying to find the truth behind mysterious murders. Of course, that’s never so easy, what with people naturally being compelled to lie, and also both figurative and literal demons to be purged.
This game comes from the same creative director asThe Shrouded Isle, a management simulator game thatI reviewed for Nintendo Switchand enjoyed for its quite creepy atmosphere. That creepiness is apparent inLucifer Within Us, but more up close and personal compared to the system and society-wide look that Kitfox’s other game provided us with. Case in point: a brief look at what seems to be a demonic ritual on the main player character at the end of the game trailer.
Investigation is the main mechanical centerpiece of this trailer, with the player having to pry information from suspects. They’ll provide their own versions of whatever happened, but none of them should be expected to be 100% truthful, even if this game does explore a “false utopia” full of “pure thoughts.” Players will have to have a firm grasp on the events that occurred in order to solve these cases when they aren’t focusing on banishing “demonic A.I.”
It is certainly a different art style thanThe Shrouded Isle, instead reminding me of Telltale games, specifically the graphic novel-inspired look ofThe Wolf Among Us. We have to wait for more information aboutLucifer Within Us, such as a release window and potential other platforms to play it on other than PC. Until then, Kitfox Games fans can look forward to their upcomingBoyfriend Dungeon, which I previewed back in PAX East, and I’ll revisit this E3 2019. Kitfox is alsoplanning to release a premium version ofDwarf Fortressfor Steam and itch.io.
For now, stick with DualShockers for more on the Kinda Funny Showcase. Be sure to check out the trailer and a gallery of screenshots below.
