Square Enix today announced that Hell has frozen over and pigs can now fly, as the developmentKingdom Hearts IIIhas gone gold. Square first announced the action RPG all the way back in E3 2013, and the road towards the release of this game has been absurdly long. With a new trailer to recap all of the Disney characters to appear in this game, the fantasy of a third mainlineKingdom Heartsgame has become a little more tangible. This isn’t the same anime-style trailer we’re used to, with a lack of Utadu Hikaru song (not even any Skrillex), but rather a more Hollywood movie trailer-like presentationâwhich makes sense, as the trailer is said to be playing in North American theaters. The trailer contains a rousing orchestral score and a narrator summarizing the basic themes of the game’s story. In case you’ve been out of the loop since the series started in 2002, it’s about the battle between light and darkness. I’d quote Axel and say “Got it memorized?” but I’m already making myself cringe. As a reminder, the Disney levels ofKingdom Hearts IIIwill include worlds based onHercules,Tangled,Big Hero 6,Frozen,Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, andToy Story. Also expect to seeWinnie the Pooh’s 100 Acre Wood return, as well as summons from Wreck-It Ralph himself and Ariel fromThe Little Mermaid. For the most part, several voice actors from these films will returnto reprise these roles. The trailer ends with a glimpse at Master Xehanort and his new Organization XIIIâas someone who has closely followedKingdom Heartslore for years, I am too embarrassed to admit that most of these trailers have made total sense to me.Check out the tweet from director Tetsuya Nomura below, which contains the trailer. You can pre-orderKingdom Hearts IIIfor PlayStation 4 or Xbox Oneon Amazonbefore its release on July 14, 2025.
