As you get your bearings in 15th Century Bohemia and attempt to make sense of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2’s wealth of systems, one thing will become painfully clear in the early hours. Getting around without a horse is a real pain in the ass.
Dualshockers Definitives: Best RPGs of 2024
In a stacked year, these RPGs rose above the rest.
Getting even from Trozkowitz to Tachov can feel like an age without a mare, and it can take a while to get one, especially if you aren’t willing to break the law or get sucked into the various side quests on offer like myself.
It begs the question, what’s the quickest way to get a horse in KCD 2? It’s a valid question and one that I can help you with. You won’t be getting the most majestic steed in the world, but something is better than nothing.

Ways To Get A Horse
In KCD 2, there are two main ways that you can get a horse, one being the honorable way and the other being the nefarious way. Here’s how it works:
Stealing A Horse
Technically, right from the moment you are freed from the stocks in Trozkowitz, you can jump onto a horse and ride it out of town. However, as you may know about the KCD series, the game isn’t shy about punishing you for treating the game like a sandbox RPG with no consequences.
This will lead to the guards of the town chasing you down, and likely murdering you due to your rather weak state at this point in the game. Plus, this horse will not be marked as an owned horse and will not come to a whistle. So really, it’s only a temporary solution to your travel problem.

If no one is watching and you have an opportunity, then there’s no reason not to steal a horse, but unless you can guarantee that you’ll get away with it, or you’re really desperate, the juice is rarely worth the squeeze.
Buying A Horse
The best option if you want a permanent mare that will come to your whistle, akin to Roach in The Witcher 3, is to buy one outright. This is sadly, however, something that will be out of your budget for quite some time in KCD2.
This is because most decent horses cost anywhere from 1K Groschen upwards, and you’ll be spending the first few hours scrounging for enough coin to pay for room and board at the inn.

These horses can be bought from the local Horse Trader, the closest of which to Trozkowitz is south towards Seline. However, when you get there, you just might find that you’re in luck, as there’s a clapped-out old mare that they might give you for cheap.
The Best Starter Horse Option
The best option for beginner players in KCD2 is to head to Seline, as this is where Henry’s horse he rode on before the ambush, Pebbles, has ended up.
Sadly, the horse does not bear your mark, and you can’t prove your ownership, so you can either try and pass a skill check to get the horse from the local groomer, or you can pay the horse trader to take it off their hands.

Pebbles isn’t the swiftest horse in the land, but when you don’t have any other option outside of earning a ludicrous amount of Groschen, beggars can’t be choosers.
How To Get Pebbles
The most efficient way to get Pebbles is to follow the main story, as the quest that sees you try and gain entry to the Balliff’s son’s wedding will lead you to Pebbles.
You’ll want to head to Tachov and enlist for work with the Blacksmith. You’ll have to go through the obligatory Blacksmithing tutorial mission first of all, but after this, they will send you on a job to get their Cart back from Seline.

You can then head to Seline, and after a run-in with the local drunkards, you’ll get to speak to the Guard captain, who will suggest you follow them out on the trail to try and find the Blacksmith’s former workers and his cart.
However, they are reluctant to ride out with you unless you have a horse to follow them. So, they’ll advise you to head to the local stables, where you will find Pebbles.
Chances are, you will fail the skill check to coerce the groomer to give you the horse, meaning you’ll need to pay for the privilege of riding your own horse. Which, unless you haggle it down a little, will cost you a cool 150 Groschen.
you may get the cash in a number of different ways to purchase Pebbles, but I would personally suggest doing any of the following:
These are just a few of the ways you can make up the cash to pay, but as soon as you do, you will have permanent access to a horse and will be able to travel from one settlement to the next in record time.
