However, one of the most heartwarming parts of its runtime was the relationship and dynamic shared between Burt Goodman and Irving Bailiff. The connection and feelings they share with each other, however painful, have become yet another praised aspect of the series.

With this in mind, Turturro and Christopher Walken talked about how they were able to bring such chemistry into the series.

Severance’sPrized Couple

There is no denying that Burt Goodman and Irving Bailiff were two of the highlights inSeverance, even though the series is packed with plenty of attention-catching elements. Showcasing everything from their first meeting to how their feelings for each other end up influencing and changing them to their very core, the series managed to deliver a magnificent love story within the span of two seasons.

However, one cannot help but wonder howJohn Turturroand Christopher Walken were able to capture the dynamic that these two share. During an interview withIndieWire, they spoke along similar lines, and their answers made a lot of sense.

When it comes to chemistry, many actor pairs take things to the next level to make sure that their dynamic on screen is perfect. They would attempt to get to know each other better and sometimes even take things to the next level and take part in tiresome rehearsals or bonding exercises.

Turturro and Walken engaged in nothing like this, and there was a very big reason for this. The two have been very close to each other for three decades. They have worked on projects before; Walken starred inThe Jesus Roll,Turturro’s latest directorial project, and they have been good friends for many years.

During the interview,Christopher Walkenstarted by saying that in their dynamic, there was a “frisson” between him and John Turturro. He nodded to a level of excitement and energy that he felt during the making of the series. He then mentioned that because of this, their first meeting did not feel like it was the first time that they laid eyes on each other.

There was this, what’s the word, frisson between us. Even though in the show they’re meeting for the first time, you can sense a little sparkle between them.

While the reason for this was their pre-existing friendship, it brought a level of familiarity to Burt and Irving’s first meeting, making it seem like they were meant to meet each other. Turturro further added to the same, stating that this wasn’t the only way that their friendship ended up helping their characters.

When you know each other a little bit, you know how each other works and [how we] bounce off each other, then you don’t have to act as much,

Turturro stated that since they knew each other very well, they knew the other’s acting style and how they did certain things. Due to this familiarity and understanding that they had, their acting felt like a dance that the viewers were witnessing.
