It is difficult to imagineInvinciblewithout J.K. Simmons’ Omni-Man. Perhaps one of the breakout performances of the show, Simmons has managed to cement himself as one of modern Hollywood’s greatest tragic characters, right up there with the likes of Darth Vader and Thanos.

It is because of this celebrated performance that it is odd to imagine that the actor turned down the role initially, not finding himself to be fit for the role of the Viltrumite. Speaking with Collider, he revealed what went through his mind when he eventually read the script, talking about how it might not have worked out for him after all.
J.K. Simmons didn’t think he was the right fit for the role, despite the show being animated
J.K. Simmonswas under the assumption that the show might not be the right fit for him. Despite being an iconic part of the superhero scene, Simmons was not really familiar with the genre, as per his won admission. Further, despite the similarities between Invincible and Spider-Man, Omni-Man could not be more different from J. Jonah Jameson, which could have added to Simmons’ skepticism about the role. Speaking withCollider, he said:
I didn’t know the source material. I’m not a big fan of that world on paper. They sent it to me, I read the script, and they actually originally asked me to play a different character in it. I read it and I thought, “Wow, this is really interesting for a genre that I personally am not a consumer of.”

But at the end of the day, for a variety of reasons, it just didn’t feel — and it’s silly to say for something animated, but it didn’t feel like the right fit. Then they came back and asked me to play Nolan, and I was like, “Yeah, sure. Great. It’s a cartoon. It’ll be fun.”
Of course, the actor would go on to essay the role of Omni-Man, a character that would become pretty popular in the cultural zeitgeist as the other ‘evil Superman’ on the block, competing with Homelander for the title of the most dastardly villain possible. Interestingly, both these adaptations came from Prime Video, which capitalized on the synergy it ended up creating.

Omni-Man stands out as one of the most nuanced takes on the ‘evil-Superman’ archetype
In a sea of what seems an endless amount go Evil Supermen, both inside and outside the DC Universe, it is safe to assume that Omni-Man stands head and shoulders above other takes on the ‘evil Superman’ archetype. The reason why this seems to be the case is because the writers of the show might be interested in actually redeeming the character of Omni-Man, rather than painting him as the villain.

While it can be argued that something similar was done with Black Adam in his film, it must be noted that the character was never a full-on antagonist in the film, despite whatever plans Dwayne Johnson had for the DCEU.
Omni-Man is a unique take on the tired and tested trope of an ‘Evil Superman’, and seems to be interested in creating a more nuanced story about the power of fatherhood and even friendship, as we see the bidding bromance between him and Allen the Alien.

Invinciblecan be streamed on Prime Video.
