For over a decade, WB has struggled to build an interwoven DC universe at the live-action front, which is now going through reformation under the new regime, led by James Gunn. However, in contrast to WB’s handling of the DCEU, they haven’t dropped the ball on the animation front.

Bruce Timm’s Justice League Unlimited

After decades of acclaimed releases under theDCAUbanner, spearheaded by Bruce Timm, Warner Bros. Animation shifted its focus to build an interconnected universe, which culminated withJustice League Dark: Apokolips War. While to many, it remains the perfect conclusion to theDCAMU, it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it might not be the perfect blueprint for a live-action adaptation.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’s Reliance on Shock Value Hasn’t Aged Well

To many, the last installment in theDCAMU, which paved the way for theTommorowverse, was a step too far, as many criticized the film’s treatment of fan-favorite characters. However, many also appreciated the film’s bold approach, which delved deeply into Darkseid’s sadistic nature, and even though the heroes do win in the end, with the earth ruined, they’re left with nothing to return to. As for the idea of a live-action iteration of this distressing narrative, not many were enthralled by it for several reasons.

Despite being an entertaining flick, oneReddit userexpressed that the film’s reliance on shock value left a bad taste in their mouth. Another fan chimed in, stressing that they’ve no intention to see their heroes get slaughter onscreen just for the sake of it. One fan argued that the film wasn’t a deserving send-off to the beloved DCAMU for similar reasons.

This explains why a live-action adaptation of the animated flick might not be preferred by many, especially in today’s age, as edgy superhero stories are no longer a novelty in the CBM landscape.
