The arrival of George Lucas’Star Warsin theaters was amajorturning point in Hollywood cinemaas itnot only changed the game in popculture, but also created a whole jargon of concepts that would later become synonymous with the franchise.

Take, for example, the word “force” – an ordinary term that has changed its meaning since the release of theStar Warsmovies. Lucas thought this was a cool term to incorporate into the films; however, one of his colleagues thought otherwise.
Brian De Palma Mocked ‘The Force’ In George Lucas’Star Wars
During a podcast interview viaLight the Fuse, filmmakerBrian de Palmarevealed he used to mockGeorge Lucasfor concocting the term “force” to denote the spiritual power in theStar Warssaga.
“I just thought the idea of The Force, you know – ‘The Force’, I would say, and I kept repeating it, [saying,] ‘It doesn’t seem like a great name for this kind of spiritual guidance.’ So needless to say, I had a lot to say about The Force, which obviously I was terribly wrong about.”

De Palma andSteven Spielbergboth saw the unfinished version of the firstStar Warsmovie.
“We all saw it as a terrific thing that George had done, and we were well aware of where the special effects weren’t there, and how they had cut in all these planes from other movies that were supposed to be the ships and stuff like that.”

Interestingly, somewhere in the interview, de Palma debunked the rumor that only Spielberg liked the film. He said he was always accused of being too frank, but he defended that “if you’re gonna show me something I’m gonna tell you what I think about it.” He only wanted to give honest opinions.

Indeed, claiming that ‘The Force’ was a terrible name was one of de Palma’s honest criticisms, but he was cool enough to admit that his initial thought about the term was wrong. Now, whenever someone mentions it, there’s only one movie that comes to mind!
Brian De Palma’s Greatest Contribution ToStar Wars
As a fellow filmmaker and a good friend of Lucas, de Palma revealed he tried to make some suggestions to improve theStar Warsmovie. He suggested following the style ofFlash Gordon.
TheScarfacedirector said that since nobody knows a thing aboutStar Wars, Lucas should at least provide some context for the beginning scene. The director had some ideas but it was de Palma who rewrote the crawl from six paragraphs down to three.

Certainly, fans can give the credit for this one to de Palma. The crawl has become a signature style of theStar Warsfranchise, and without his contribution, the first scene would have been very tedious to watch.
Star Warsremains one of the longest-enduring sci-fi sagas in the film industry, and one of the things that sets it apart from other franchises is its trademark use of the word ‘The Force.’

Star Warsfilms are available to watch on Disney+.
