Taylor Sheridan has explored the American West and Middle with his shows and films. Though he began as an actor, Sheridan reportedly took to writing after failing to gather any momentum in his acting career. He did have small roles inSons of Anarchy, but Sheridan eventually decided to tell stories his way.

Sheridan’s works have since received acclaim and controversy. His showYellowstonebecame a phenomenon and recently ended its five-season run amidst several delays. He was also nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay forHell or High Water. However, over the years, he may have strayed away from his promise about his intention with his works.
Taylor Sheridan promised to show new worlds with his work
BeforeTaylor Sheridanbecame the king of modern-day Westerns withYellowstone, he explored the American Frontier through his movies. A former actor who turned to screenwriting, Sheridan began writing what he knew as he spent his days in ranches and reservations away from LA.

He began his writing career with the critically acclaimedSicario. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro, the film explored the border conflicts between the USA and Mexico and the effects of the cartel. His second written workHell or High Waterwas nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Sheridan’s directorial debutWind Riverexplored the deaths of Indigenous women across America. The three films reportedly constituted a thematic American Frontier trilogy that explored the spaces in the USA that were not often depicted in the mainstream. When asked what his intentions with his works were, he said (viaScreen Crush),

For me as a storyteller, I think one of the great things our job can do is introduce people to a world they don’t know exists that’s right beside them. And obviously, one of the great beauties of the arts in the cinema is the opportunity to ask questions and kind of reflect our world back to us and have the audience ask questions and maybe effect some change.
He said that he would like to hold up a mirror to the people about places they might have visited or driven through and open up a conversation about the injustices occurring there.

HasYellowstonestuck to Taylor Sheridan’s promise of showing new frontiers?
Taylor Sheridan’s most popular work is the neo-Western TV showYellowstone. Initially pitched as ‘The Godfatherin Montana,’ the show followed the power struggles of the Yellowstone Ranch headed by its patriarch John Dutton. The conflict between Dutton, land development businesses, and the local reservation population seemed to be the perfect setting for aSuccession-esque Western show.

The initial episodes of the series also seemed to show audiences a new look at rural America, where ranches and the like are the lives of people. Sheridan even mentioned that he was afraid that people would be moving on to the next ‘shiny’ thing after the series ended despite trying to prove why a way of life deserved to be preserved. He said toTHR,
I thought I had tricked people by showing a world worth protecting. But when the show is over, that notion will go away and there will be a new shiny penny everyone watches. So I felt like I didn’t accomplish anything — which, for me, is really important.

While he tried to do so with the introduction of the real-life Four Sixes Ranch,Yellowstonebecame increasingly occupied with politics within the series, the stories of the Dutton family, and the secondary characters to pay attention to the original intention of the show. This is probably why the final season of theseries was not as well-received.
Yellowstoneis available to stream on Paramount+.
