During the interview, Mashima was asked about the power of friendship trope inFairy Tailand what inspired him to create an intriguing story around it. Mashima pointed out that the actual reason behind him creatingFairy Tailis quite sad.
He stated:
To tell you the truth, I wrote the story cause I had no friends. My loneliness is what you’re glimpsing.

According to the mangaka, he believed that he had no friends during his childhood. His loneliness thus became his biggest motivator to create a storythat exclusively reflects on friendship.
EveryFairy Tailfan who was present during the interview then agreed to be Mashima’s friend and help him get rid of his loneliness.
