Tom Cruise’sTop Gun: Maverickwas a massive hit. The sequel was released in theatres after 36 years after Tony Scott’s 1986 original. The sequel accumulated a whopping $1.472 billion, which is insane considering the theatres were closed due to the global pandemic. Since the sequel was a massive success, the potential for a third installment was high. However, Paramount soon confirmed another film was in development at Paramount.

But it looks like fans won’t be able to see theTop Gun 3sequel anytime soon. Making an appearance on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast hosted by Joseph Horowitz,Joseph Kosinskishared the challenges and the emotional reason to bring Maverick back. However, Kosinski added that he has“this F1 movie in front of me right now,”referring to the film starringBrad Pitt. As well as other projects that delay the much-anticipated sequel.

“So of course you think about these things, but for me, I’ve got this F1 movie in front of me right now. I’m developing some other things. Tom is off shooting another [Mission: Impossible] and possibly going to space. So we’ve all got very ambitious things ahead of ourselves.

He further added,

“Maybe when Tom and I have dinner at some point it will come up. It’s not something I would just throw out. I’m busy, he’s busy. Jerry’s producing the Formula 1 movie with me. Listen, it took 36 years for Maverick, it could take 36 for the next one. I don’t know. It’s all about a story that I love, a challenge that’s exciting. For me, that’s why I do it and I know that’s why Tom does it.”

Even though the project is in production doesn’t mean that the sequel will happen because there can be several reasons that the idea gets discarded, but it’s for sure that Paramount is looking forward to making the project a reality.

The film will feature Brad Pitt playing the role of Sonny Hayes, a retired F1 driver who moves away from the series and races elsewhere after suffering a huge crash during the 1990s.

The film is set to feature original F1 circuits such as Silverstone, continued in Abu Dhabi, and is now shooting at Daytona in 2024. The filming also took place in Hungary and Las Vegas.
