The martial arts comedy-drama,Cobra Kai, is a continuation ofThe Karate Kidfilms from the 80s. It stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively, from the movies. And after five successful seasons, it is inching towards the sixth, which will be released in three parts, starting with the first one premiering later this month.

Ralph Macchio has said that when he was initially approached for the show, he was hesitant to join. He had lived with the craze ofThe Karate Kidfranchise in his youth and did not think he wanted to dive back into that once more. But finally, he made his decision to come back and reprise his most popular role for the series.
Ralph Macchio Wanted to Honor The Legacy ofThe Karate Kid
Ralph Macchio became a household name with his portrayal of Daniel LaRusso in the 80s martial arts movie series,The Karate Kid. But when show creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg approached him for the show, which initially premiered on YouTube Red/Premium, he wasn’t sure if it was the right call to play his most beloved role once more after so many years.
Thankfully, he decided to reprise his role alongside William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence, and their fierce rivalry was brought back to life. But there was one thing Macchio had to verify when he joined the show – continue the legacy of the original story. Speaking toRolling Stoneback in 2020, Maccio said:

The first day I worked on the Miyagi set, in the backyard, it was a scene with Robby, us painting the fence side by side, going opposite directions. We rehearsed the scene, and I just, “Wow, this is where the magic all happened.”
It was emotional because some of my friends that I made that movie with are no longer here. And also, from the get-go when they pitched this idea, I needed to have those moments, the legacy of what Miyagi brought to Danny LaRusso’s life. It’s important that it was peppered throughout the Cobra Kai series, and they assured me of that.

Even though a lot of the people who were once part ofThe Karate Kidfranchise are not with us anymore, their contribution to the story and their legacy will remain. And Macchio was only too happy to keep it moving in the right direction.
