Wolverine used to be unarguably one of the biggest fan-favorite characters out of all the X-Men. Then came Hugh Jackman, who brought the character to life so immaculately that now fans can’t imagine anyone else playing the respective mutant. But while fans from all across the globe have been deeply mesmerized by his performance, there is still one person who isn’t.
This one person is the singer cum songwriter cum musician and record producer, Glenn Danzig, who was also a contender for this role. As it turns out, not only did Jackman’s performance as Logan cease to impress Danzig and led him to call it“gay,”but it also made him realize just how grateful he was to not have taken on the role!
Glenn Danzig Was Not Impressed With Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine
WhileHugh Jackmanperfectly fits the role like he was made for it, he wasn’t the only one being considered to play Wolverine when the ideas were in talks of being materialized for the character’s first live-action appearance. Instead, the part went through a lot of actors before finally landing in the 55-year-old fan-favorite legend’s resume.
One of the people it went through was Glenn Danzig, the metal rocker and“Wolverine fanatic”who was in talks to embody the mutant during the first film’s pre-production. Apparently, he was considered a stronger contender for the role because he greatly resembled the character in the comics (viaLooper).

But while not being the final person to play it was one thing, what’s actually surprising is that Danzig was incredibly critical of how Jackman brought the X-man to life. In fact, he even claimed that had he been cast instead, his performance would have been a lot different and less“gay”thanThe Greatest Showman‘s!
According to what Danzig claimed in an interview with the Los Angeles Weekly when asked how differently he would have played the character than Jackman (viaMetal Injection):
It wouldn’t have been as gay.
That’s not all, for theMothersinger even went on to claim how theLoganstar was actually never the first choice for the role. He said:
Actually, he wasn’t the first choice. They hired Dougray Scott. He had a falling out with the director, and then they hired Hugh Jackman.
Needless to say, that isas scorching a criticism as can get. But Danzig was anything but done contributing to the fire, considering how his next words made it seem like Jackman’s performance was what made him glad he didn’t get cast in the role!

During the same interview, Danzig went on to express how glad he was to not have gotten cast as Logan in theX-Mensaga, hinting that it was presumably because of how theLes Misérablesstar brought the character to life.

As per what Danzig continued to brutally confess about playing Logan:
I’m glad I didn’t do it. It was terrible.
Well, on behalf of all the other fans,Hugh Jackman’s performance as Loganhas been anything but“terrible”so far, with more accurate words to describe it being“beyond-gobsmacking”and“unbelievable.”But, then again, to each their own.
