The Vampire Diariespremiered in 2009 and took the television scene by storm because everyone loved the mix of romance, drama, and supernatural elements. At the heart of it all was Nina Dobrev, who played the female lead, Elena Gilbert.

The moment she signed up to play Elena, she also took on a second, much darker role. But was Dobrev aware of the same? Let’s find out what the actress has to say about her dual persona in the hit series.

Nina Dobrev’s dual role inThe Vampire Diarieswas a surprise and a challenge

According to an interview with Fancast,Nina Dobrevhad only auditioned for the role of Elena (viaONTD). The actress was under the impression that she would play the self-sacrificing and kind-hearted girl who’s caught between the supernatural drama. But later she learned that she would also be playing Katherine Pierce.

When I first auditioned, I worked really hard and crossed my fingers that I would get the part of Elena. I had no idea I would also be playing Katherine. Much later Katherine was introduced into the script through the flashbacks and I found out I was both Elena and Katherine.

It raised the stakes and changed the opportunity from just the role of a girl next door to two very conflicting and different challenges.

Katherine was a centuries-old lookalike, who was cunning and a ruthless vampire, the exact opposite of Elena. Dobrev had to ensure that she made the two characters feel different, so she relied on changing her wardrobe, body language, and mindset. Simply switching to some edgy boots would help her to slip into the character of Katherine, even during the scenes when her dual roles interacted.

An interesting detail about Katherine was her Bulgarian heritage, and many would know that in the original books by L.J Smith, the character was of German descent. However, the showrunners decided that it would be better to adapt to Dobrev’s real-life Bulgarian background.

Dobrev also touched upon the central conflict ofThe Vampire Diariesin the interview, i.e.,the love trianglebetween Elena, Stefan, and Damon. The actress shared that Elena’s love for Stefan was pure whereas Katherine’s love was fuelled by her history and old ties.

As the series went on, Elena had a significant growth arc and was no longer an ordinary teenager. The actress believed that her character had developed, and“matured both mentally and emotionally.”But most importantly, it was Dobrev who grew as an artist while portraying two women who were as different as day and night.
