The Future Trunks Saga is distinct from the other storylines due to the introduction of an unusual antagonist. The battles were great, the plot unbelievably twisted, and the various timelines added a bit of spice.

The Future Trunks Saga is the fourth saga of theDragon Ball Superanime. It features the return of Future Trunks but from an alternate timeline, and the battles surpass time and space. However, it is unlike the usual arcs of the series, and it even took Toyotarou by shock. Ina discussion, he revealed:
I was shocked when I first read your original draft. I had thought of gods as being absolutely good, so having one of them turn evil raised the tension. The sense of tension flowing from the story from that point onward was incredible.
According to Toyotarou, it is hard to make things tense in aDragon Ballstory. However, setting it in an alternate timeline/future where Dragon Balls are no longer there to reverse deaths or mistakes raised the tension plenty. Once dead, characters would not have been able to come back to life anymore.

The stakes were even higher due to the unknown identity of the villain. Zamasu’s complex personality was also something that had never been seen before. Average Dragon Ball villains usually tend to be completely black and evil. Zamasu walked the grey line between morality and a sense of justice, making him an incomprehensible character.

At his core, Zamasu is actually well-meaning, though his ways were completely unorthodox. He cared for the development and prosperity of the universe. He observed how mortals were prone to commencing wars repeatedly without the core understanding that mortal life was the key to the universe’s prosperity.

However, he came to the conclusion that it would be just better to kill off the mortals so that they don’t make the same mistakes again and again. He even scoffs at the idea that mortals could be trusted with the handling of important matters. Thus, for this saga, it was crucial to depict the inner struggles of Zamasu, something thatAkira Toriyamacould not have achieved without Toyotarou.
If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I’m not very good at depicting the characters’ psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story (laughs)
Toyotaro has played a major rolein handling the story ofDragon Ball Super. After the passing away of Toriyama, he took up the reins of the manga, and fans have great expectations from him. But Toriyama’s unyielding trust in Toyotaro might be an indication thatDragon Ball willcontinue thriving.
