Christian Bale is known throughout the Hollywood industry for his adaptability to characters. As a method actor, he takes every role that comes his way and magnifies the significance of the character through his depiction. His skills as an actor have always been enough to mesmerize the audience regardless of the film’s success. Having done so many films, his range incorporates some of the most contrasting characters.

Bale can play a hero and he can play a villain just as wonderfully. The power he holds as an actor because of his performance is one that helps many fans also resonate with the various personalities he plays. Despite it all, there was one character he portrayed whose description caught him off guard. Primarily because James Mangold thought the character was exactly like Bale. Ironically enough, the role was meant to be for Brad Pitt much before him.
James Mangold Thought Ken Miles was Just Like Christian Bale
During an interview withGQ, Matt Damon andChristian Balegathered together to talk about their hit filmFord v Ferrari.The movie gathered a lot of attention not just because of the star cast but also because of the astonishing way each character was presented. When the script of the movie was first given to Bale, he saw Ken Miles to be just another character.
He was like, ‘Christian, the character’s just you. Don’t you get that? It’s you, you difficult w*nker!’ That’s how he said it to me. ‘You know it already!’

James Mangold, who the actor had worked with previously, approached Bale with a statement that wasn’t one he saw coming. The director stated that Miles was exactly the kind of character he envisioned when thinking about Bale and vice versa. They were both extremely similar in his opinion and there was no one better to play him thanThe Dark Knightactor.

Mangold tried convincing the actor about the similarities, stating that he is a difficult person to deal with and thus perfectly portrayed through Ken Miles.
Christian Bale was Aghast After Learning the Truth
Christian Bale was not prepared for the words James Mangold had to offer. He was taken aback through and through because during the course ofFord v Ferrari,Ken Miles was referred continuously to be a pain and a difficult person to deal with.
That’s what Mangold said to me too! Like, someone who’s been called an *rsehole throughout the whole film! I don’t know how to take that. He sent me the script. And you’re the last person to recognize any relationship to yourself.

Being compared to a character who is seen so easily in a negative light came as a surprise to the actor. He admitted that it is only natural for people to notice similarities that regard themselves last as compared to those of others. So it made sense as to why he didn’t see it at first. However, being given that reality check wasn’t something he knew how to comprehend.
