During a conversation withThe Daily Beast, actorKurt Russellshared that he tried for both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker parts, but atthe same time, another potential project was also lined up for him.

“Both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. That was back in the day when all the usual suspects in their twenties would roll in there, and it was early 1976 becauseat the same time wasa television Western called The Quest that they were offering me. I really loved the part.”
In order for him to come to a decision, he asked directorGeorge Lucasif he had a chance to be part of theStar Warsteam, towhich the filmmaker regretfully replied in the negative.
“It came down to these things, and I was in there on Star Wars and remember asking George [Lucas] one day, ‘Do you think you’re going to use me or not?’ And he said, ‘I don’t know which part I prefer you in. I don’t know if I like you as Han and this guy asSkywalker,or this guy as Han and you as Skywalker. I don’t know.’”
He could not waste any more of his or Lucas’timeso hechose to acceptthe other Western project.
