There were four Superman comics that influenced Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the character in the DCEU. By his own admission, Henry Cavill decided to go with more modern depictions of the character, which allowed him to associate the imagery of Superman’s surroundings with the character himself.

Henry Cavill as Superman

The works that Henry Cavill decided to read in preparation for his character were very instrumental to Superman. Hence, David Corenswet must also be hard-pressed to read those comics in preparation for his role, aside from the ones that James Gunn has said would inspire his Superman film.

Four comics that inspired Henry Cavill’s Superman

Henry Cavillrevealed that four stories of Superman particularly inspiredhis version of the character. He said:

I didn’t go too far back, though, because I prefer more of the modern stuff—just because I can associate with the imagery more. It was primarily Death [of Superman], Return [of Superman], and Red Son. I also liked Superman/Batman: The Search for Kryptonite because I really enjoyed the interaction between those two characters.

Given the nature ofZack Snyder‘s trilogy in the DCEU, it makes sense how these characters could have informed the character’s portrayal inMan of Steel,Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, andZack Snyder’s Justice League. The focus of these stories was very much on how Superman would meet his end, along with how he and Batman would interact with each other.

David Corenswet’s Superman should take a little from these comics as well

The Superman that we will be seeing in the DCU is definitely going to be a little lighter compared to what audiences saw in the DCEU. However,Death of Superman,Red Son, and all of the Superman/Batman crossover series are fertile ground to create a hopeful, inspiring character, one that not only can exist in his own microcosm but also interact with other big players in the DCU, like the Justice League.

A DC-shared universe that features both Batman and Superman usually has the two developing a very close friendship, which is essential for any Batman and Superman actor to be privy to. This could allow them to craft the character in a manner that compliments and contrasts the other, creating a sense of camaraderie that they need to function as the two most important members of the Justice League.

Supermanhits theatres on June 08, 2025.
