The live-actionTransformersfilms have had mixed reception among audiences and critics, with some entries shooting for the stars, while others becoming unintelligible CGI slug fests. However, there is one area that the franchise has yet to explore, in that not a single entry has yet to venture into theatres with an R-rating.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a long-time producer of the franchise, talked about whether the franchise would ever pivot to an R-rated offering, talking about the various factors that go into making an entry for the franchise. This process has proven not to be conducive to an R-rated film.
It takes a lot of money to make Transformers films
Transformers films are expensive to make, and R-rated films do not generate the kind of income that can make that investment back,Lorenzo di Bonaventuraechoed these sentiments while speaking toComicBook.com. He said:
Look, I love new boundaries, you know, so that for me, it sounds really fun to be able to do something like that.

But the truth of the matter is, this cost a lot of money – and, you know, these movies are supposed to be designed for everybody, all audiences. And so I’d like to keep it there and verify that we don’t disappoint or freak out some of our fans by going in a different direction.
An R-rated Transformers film might be a novel idea, but given the amount nature of the IP, an R rating would be useless for an entry in the franchise. Already rife with fantasy violence, adding any sort of human drama that would merit an R-rating could needlessly mess up the brand image of the franchise.

More animated films in the Transformers franchise might be the way to go
While the live-action Transformers films have had varying degrees of success, animated Transformers films are some of the most iconic entries in the franchise. While 3D animation has received quite some praise in the West, the franchise as a whole could benefit from some traditionally animated films, albeit not for a theatrical release.

As the franchise expands, there seems to be a lot of alternate continuities being launched using 3D animation. While some cater to the mainstream, there are more than a few that delve into the deep history of the Transformers universe. However, given that the medium originated with animation and then expanded into comics, traditional animation might be the medium for the franchise going forward.
