Matt Damon’sThe Martianwould totally become a different movie if the original plan for the project pushed through. His collaboration with Ridley Scott was a massive critical success, so perhaps there was a reason why they had to face challenges first.

A comic book film in early development at the time interfered with the movie’s progress. Damon was already losing hope that it might get shelved or delayed, but Scott ultimately came into the picture and saved the franchise.

Ridley Scottwas not the first to get attached toThe Martianas screenwriterDrew Goddardinitially pioneered the project. He wrote the script simply because of his love for the source material and he soon met withMatt Damonto discuss plans.
Goddard never really liked imagining actors while drafting scripts but this one was an exemption. He toldTHRthat theJason Bourneactor “was always at the top of our list” and he would honestly not know what he’d do if the actor rejected his proposal.

Interestingly, a superhero movie calledThe Sinister Sixwas in the works and Goddard wanted to do it as well. In his interview withMaclean’s, Damon shared:
I went and met with Drew and was considering doing it. But then he got Sinister Six, which is a comic book thing he had wanted to do. It was like his dream job. So he said, ‘Well, okay, I can’t do The Martian. Or I can do The Martian in like a year.’

Damon could not say anything but “okay” even though he was now eager to get this project done. As soon as he got a call from Scott, who received the script and was impressed by it, they immediately worked together.
The Sinister Sixwas a planned two-part spinoff to Sony’sThe Amazing Spider-Manfranchise. There had been a lot of talks about it before but the plan eventually fell through. The movie was supposed to feature themost well-known villains of theSpider-Manlore.
