Earlier this week, gamers were stunned by leakedfootage of an AI cloneof the character Aloy, from the hit PlayStationHorizon series.Although the technology was surprising, most of us were just shocked to see such a prominent gaming studio have a full display of AI character technology.

Ashly Burch, the actress behind Aloy who is also currently on strike with SAG-AFTRA, gave her own poignant takeon Instagramregarding the AI clone/strike situation.

To be fair, this technology only appears to be ameager tech demo, and there is no evidence that the software will be used in any upcoming project. Still, seeing such aclunky-looking AIclone was a surprise, especially considering the massive situation regarding actor-focused AI implementation.

Freya and Atreus are also getting new stuff too.

Around the same time this demo leaked,SAG-AFTRAreleased a statementabout the current acting strike against game companies. The statement highlighted points such as the many “alarming loopholes that will leave our members vulnerable to A.I. abuse.”

The conversation about AI acting doubles in gaming has shifted away from whether this will actually happen, to how soon will it start? With companies like Nvidia prominently displaying theseAI chat modelsfrom the perspective of games, it seems like a matter of time.

However, the transition of AI models into the broader gaming marketplace is what has Burch “worried about this art form.” While she isn’t abruptly fighting the changing tides, she and SAG-AFTRA are looking to mitigate the damage it could potentially cause tovideo game actors.

We’re asking for protections. So currently what we’re fighting for is that you have to get our consent before you make an AI version of us in any form, you have to compensate us fairly, and you have to tell us how you’re using this AI double.

Clear rules of consent forAI modelsare one of the most obvious ways companies and actors can collaborate with this new technology. With these rules implemented, actors would hopefully be compensated for the work that gaming companies benefit from.

These rules aren’t focused on stopping gaming companies from implementing AI, but at the very least, that could stop them from outright abusing performers for their work.

The Dangerous Ways AI Could Be Abused Against Actors

An important point is that Ashly Burch’s performance did not train the recent leaked footage of an AI Aloy.If you caught the footage before it was scrubbed from the internet, you could tell the bot itself barely reflected Burch’s performance of Aloy.

Atomfall Length Is Roughly Same Length As Fallout 4 With This Major Exception

Rebellion was aware of the Fallout comparisons even before the game was revealed.

But as Burch points out in their post, thepotential abusecomes from an AI model that is trained after an actor/actress without their explicit consent.

I feel worried not because the technology exists… I just imagine a video like this coming out that does have someone’s performance attached to it, that does have someone’s voice or face or movement, and the possibility that if we lose this fight, that person would have no recourse.

If we expect AI implementation to slowly become a normative feature within gaming, it’s pretty apparent that these systems could potentially be used to abuse and exploit voice actors.

And all over the AI debate, companies have been put under deep controversy for thepotentially illegal waysthey train their AI models.

Hopefully, the current strikes with SAG-AFTRA will end with these preventative measures being met, and the talented voice actors will continue to get compensation for thefantastic rolesthey portray in our favorite games.
