Hogwarts Legacyfeatures a variety of spells from the Harry Potter universe, including iconic spells such as Expelliarmus and even the unforgivable curses, all at your disposal. Every spell falls under a specific category, such as Damage spells or Control spells, with each category being useful in its own way depending on the situation you find yourself in.

For attacking, Damage spells are essential and are your primary source for taking down enemies. Some are easier to use, while others like Incendio require you to incorporate a bit of strategy into the mix. Each of them is different and can be as effective as you make them to be, but a few stand out and are generally better in combat scenarios.
Diffindo is a highly damaging spellthat sends a slash through the air which will hit an enemy and deal some serious damage. It has a longer range than most, allowing you to snipe enemies, if need be. And if paired with Glacius, boosts its damage potential even further.

Upgrading Diffindo is also worth considering since the talent effectively allows you to eliminate small groups of enemies. The spell will be able to hit multiple targets, piercing through one enemy and hitting another. Its only downside is the longer cooldown, but every spell must be balanced for the game to be more enjoyable.
6Confringo
Who doesn’t love swinging fireballs at enemies, especially withsomething as cinematic as Confringo. This spell shoots a fire projectile at an enemy that can do massive damage and is especially effective if you use it on bosses.
Upgrading Confirngo boosts its damage potential since it will be able to hit multiple enemies and even set people on fire, allowing for some lingering damage during a fight. Some enemies such as spiders are extra vulnerable to fire, so this spell can also act as a specialized way of taking them down.

Crucio is not directly a damage spell sinceit falls in the unforgivable curse’s category, but it can be incredibly versatile in the damage department. Casting Crucio on a target will put them in unspeakable pain which in-game means a constant source of damage over time.
Hogwarts Legacy: Every Companion, Ranked
There are several main companions in Hogwarts Legacy. Check out how they rank against each other.
It is especially effective when swarms of enemies ambush you into a corner, as you may cast Crucio to temporarily take out some of them. Upgrading Crucio makes it a decent area-of-effect spell as well, further boosting its versatility in combat.

Bombarda is essentially a better Confringo, except it leaves a huge explosion in its wake when fired at an enemy. The explosion can hit multiple targets, allowing for some great area-of-effect damage that will prove useful when ambushed by multiple enemies.
It is a great substitute for the unforgivable curses if you’re playing a character that doesn’t indulge in the dark arts, though it’s every bit as brutal. Although it’s not as effective on single targets such as bosses, you can use it regardless and still get good results. Bombarda is a fairly late-game spell though, which means it will be a while before you unlock it.

Incendio has the highest damage outputof all the damaging spells, obliterating enemies with flames that also leave some lingering damage by setting the targets on fire. It is severely limited by its extremely short range though, so you must be up close and personal for it to do some serious damage.
Combining Incendio with some other useful spells such as Glacius or Accio can boost its effectiveness in a fight since you can either freeze an enemy and close the distance or bring the target to you with Accio. Either way, it’s one of the better damage-type spells but only if you’re aggressive enough to keep up with the play style that it requires you to adopt.
2Expelliarmus
Expelliarmus is a spell that is used to disarmenemies, which means once you use this spell on someone, they must pick up their wand again to defend themselves. This opens a crucial window where you can spam as many spells as you like while they’re unable to defend themselves.
You can see why this spell was Harry Potter’s favorite, as it’s a non-lethal way of taking down even the toughest enemies. If you use it on executioner enemies during their attack, their attack will hit them instead, further boosting the damage potential and versatility that Expelliarmus brings to the table.
1Avada Kedavra
Avada Kedavra is the iconic killing curse, a favorite of dark wizards since it can straight-up kill an enemy. It’s also technically not a damage spell since it’s an unforgivable curse, but it’s such an amazing spell to use in a combat situation, allowing you to one-shot any enemy that approaches you.
The drawback for Avada Kedavra is its unusually long cooldown and the fact that not every enemy is vulnerable to it, making it more of a situational spell. The mastery elevates it further allowing you to hit multiple targets that are cursed and if paired up nicely with other spells like Imperio, can cause devastation in its wake.
