Shark Tankhas always been the perfect platform for entrepreneurs with out-of-the-box ideas to showcase their innovations. It’s a place where bold business concepts meet seasoned investors, and where intense competition often sparks unexpected drama. This was certainly the case when Xin and Melissa Wang presented their company to the sharks.

Their pitch not only captured the attention of the investors but also set the stage for a heated rivalry between Barbara Corcoran and Kevin O’Leary, both eager to secure a stake in the business.
The reason why Barbara Corcoran and Kevin O’Leary clashed onShark Tank
OnShark Tank,a tense moment unfolded betweenBarbara Corcoranand Kevin O’Leary over JicaFoods, a company specializing in healthy, jicama-based snacks like wraps and chips. The founders Xin and Melissa Wang, were seeking $300,000 for 3% equity in their business, hoping to secure an investment to help them scale and grow.
Both Corcoran and O’Leary were eager to invest in the company, each hoping to land the deal. So, Corcoran made an offer to the entrepreneurs, proposing $300,000 for 6% equity and 3% advisory shares. Mr. Wonderful, not wanting to be outdone, responded with his own offer, buthis words didn’t go over wellwith the Corcoran Group founder. She said:

I know what I do well—I do sales and marketing, and that’s how I became rich in the first place. I know it better than anyone else and can certainly deliver the same social marketing as Mr. Wonderful, who thinks he’s much more wonderful than he actually is.
This exchange clearly signaled the competitive nature between the two sharks. Despite the heated moment, the entrepreneurs decided to accept Corcoran’s offer, which included a slightly better deal for them: $300,000 for 6% equity and 3% advisory shares.

Since appearing on the show, JicaFoods has thrived. The company has expanded its product line to include not only wraps and chips but also jicama sticks and salsas in different flavors. They’ve reached over 1,600 retail stores, including major chains like Whole Foods and Sprouts Farmers’ Market.

In 1992, Corcoran was delivering a package to a 4,600-square-foot penthouse on Fifth Avenue. It was during a tough time in her career, but when she walked into the apartment, she knew she had to own it one day. Corcoran shared withThe New York Times:
I walked in and saw this green, lush terrace through the French doors, and said to the lady who let me in, ‘if you’re ever going to sell this, would you sell it to me?

Though the owner didn’t take her seriously at first, when she was ready to sell, she called Corcoran. In 2018, Corcoran and her husband bought the penthouse for $10 million and spent $3 million on renovations. The apartment now has a greenhouse, a curved staircase, and a terrace with amazing city views.
