As soon as a manga begins to gain attention, fans start looking forward to a potential anime adaptation. In that situation, nothing is more fascinating to witness than an anime bringing out the best aspects of its manga counterpart. And that’s how Hajime Isayama feels about the anime adaptation ofAttack on Titan.

Isyama shared his thoughts on theAttack on Titananime during an interview, and the anime not only exceeded his expectations but also allowed him to make up for the manga’s shortcomings. He relied on the director of the series to bring his vision to life, and the team behind the anime did a wonderful job at that.
Hajime Isayama SawAttack on Titan Animeas a Second Chance and Utilized it Brilliantly
Attack on Titanmanga was first published in 2009, and the anime adaptation began its run in 2013.Hajime Isayamabelieved that the manga would end fairly quickly, so he restrained himself from fully exploring some characters, as he shared during an interview (via translations on Tumblr). He tried to develop the story faster to keep the readers hooked on the plot progression.
He regretted not delving deeper into the personalities of some characters, especially Jean. He also felt unsatisfied with the three-dimensional maneuver gear’s design. With those regrets, the anime adaptation was an opportunity for Isayama to fix some of the issues with the manga. He requested the director of the anime, Tetsuro Araki, to improve these aspects.

I was really happy because I had the chance to amend any parts I held regrets for. Additionally, the anime quality was excellent – if the full score is 100, I would say that the animated version’s score is 120.
The mangaka also shared that he truly believed if he didn’t enjoy creating something, the audience wouldn’t enjoy it either. Those who worked on the anime enjoyed the process as well, which helped their motivation, and their dedication was reflected in the final product as well. Both the anime and manga ofAttack on Titanare extremely popular, however, the studio switch after the third season initially sparked some criticism from fans.

The Controversial Studio Switch from Wit to MAPPA
After the third season of the anime, the anime switched studios from Studio Wit to Studio MAPPA. There was a stark difference between the art styles of both studios. Fans heavily criticized the character designs by MAPPA. However, as the anime progressed, fans warmed up to the new art style. Part of the reason why fans became more receptive is because of MAPPA’s spectacular animation.

The final parts of the anime looked stunning, especially during the high-stakes moments. MAPPA’s art style was more intense, and fit the gravity of the apocalyptic progression. While Wit exceeded Isayama’s expectations, MAPPA did the same for fans. With each edition of the final season, the visual aspects only got better.
Attack on Titananime is available to stream on Crunchyroll and the manga can be read on K-Manga app and website.
