Spider-Man 2narrative director Jon Paquette revealed in an interview withTheGamerthat Gwen Stacy won’t be appearing in the upcoming game. While you’ll be able to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Spider-Man 2, the fan-favourite spider-person Gwen Stacy won’t be joining the duo in New York.

“We’re always getting ideas, but we need to stay focused on the story that we’re trying to tell, and she isn’t part of the story we’re trying to tell; unfortunately for those Gwen Stacy fans out there. But who knows?” Paquette said.

While it would appear that Insomniac has certainly entertained the idea of including Gwen in the series, it won’t be happening this time around. The ever-elusive “who knows?” may be enough to give Gwen fans hope for future instalments in the series, though.

It’s not the first time that Insomniac has mentioned Gwen, either. Prior to the first game’s release, the developer’s brand account cryptically tweeted out “Who said Gwen Stacy is dead in our universe?”, likely alluding to Stacy being present in some form in Insomniac’s universe.

One of the most anticipated new features in Spider-Man 2 is the ability to seamlessly switch between Peter and Miles. Though Stacy could have been a side character, Insomniac likely didn’t want to overcomplicate the story with too many characters.

Speaking on the number of characters and antagonists in the first game, Paquette said, “I remember saying to [game director] Bryan after we finished the first game that we can never have that many characters again, because that was really hard. But I think we’ve got about the same number of characters. I think it’s just how we like to tell a story…”

Spider-Man 2 will release on October 20 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
