Base building is a longstanding staple in any survival game. Picking the best location for a base is a different experience for everyone, depending on their needs. Need room to make a large base that you’re able to lounge about in? Or are you more utilitarian and need something small and hidden from enemies?

Groundedis a gorgeous game with several options for players to build the base how they want. Location is always the biggest thing discussed in picking a home in real life. It is also a defining factor for many folks picking a base location in games. So, here are some of the best spots to build in the backyard.

10Baseball

It isn’t the easiest spot to build on top of, and it won’t be able to promote a large home base location. That being said, this is a great spot for people to build, particularly early in the game.

There are many early and mid-game resources nearby, and it can be defended against raids with a lot of ease. It is a location that is marked on the map for easier navigation when learning your way around the backyard, and it has an outpost nearby for research.

9Near the Mysterious Machine

Those who have traversed the yard in search of the best location for their base may have stumbled onto this location, but most players accidentally pass it by. It’s no wonder, as it easily blends with the landscape, but this location is amazing to the right builders.

East of the Machine is a curled-up orange leaf on top of a small plateau that can only be reached by bugs via a small ramp. There is also a twig here that players can climb onto. Clearing the area unlocks a mid-sized location that can be built up and easily defended from one side.

8Hedge Hideout

Not the easiest spot to build as it is far from many resources. Still, it is a good location to take a look at if you haven’t settled on a base location. It has a lot of wide open areas, and there are a lot of spots where there are no ‘neighbors’ nearby.

It will require venturing out a lot to get resources and good defense systems in place against raids. It can also get very dark and hard to see for some players. That doesn’t mean you can’t create a gothic-inspired castle with turret defenses and still have some space to spare. There are also a couple of outposts nearby to utilize for scientific research.

7Picnic Table

If you’re looking for options that can go big or small, look no further than the picnic table. This place has plenty of flat surfaces, so you’re able to easily build your base here.

If being close to the bees and the black ants isn’t the ideal spot, there are options below the table. A flat rock sits down below, providing protection from the scarce lower enemies. Having few enemies also means the ground below the table is also up for grabs for the right builder.

6Retaining Wall

There are a series of flat stones shoring up different sections of the yard, as is seen in most homes' landscaping. Below the Birdbath and near the Hedges are some of the flat pavers that create the landscaping sections for the yard. They also surround the pond area.

These spots are ideal for those who want flat spots to build unique bases. Keep in mind that there are often dangerous enemies in these areas, so building defenses is a must, as most of the pavers offer little to no protection from enemies or raids. They will allow for some amazing bases with the space they provide, though.

5Birdbath Top

Making it hard to reach is a good way to get a protected base from most opponents. There are only a few places on the map harder to get to than the Birdbath near the Hedges. Building on top of the Birdbath is not something to be taken lightly, though, as some enemies still spawn here.

Aside from the Mosquitoes, this location has some of the most amazing views in the entire game. Imagine waking up and gazing out across your personal jungle, knowing only selected creatures can get to you.

4Wheelbarrow

By far, the least centralized location in the backyard is the Wheelbarrow. This will make it hard to traverse across the backyard and can be a struggle for certain types of resources that do not spawn near its location. There are still some good neighbors that are highly desired nearby.

It is easily defensible if players build in it and shore up the walkway along the brick wall. This leaves it with easily defended sides. Building on top of it will have some threat to the Moth that lives there. The nearby resources are bountiful, and while some tougher enemies are around, they are good late-game farms like Black Ox Beetles and the Moth.

3Lily Pads

Not the easiest location to access is the Lily Pad. That isn’t a bad thing considering the pads also provide a natural defense. Raids are far less of a concern in this location, as most creatures cannot get out to the pads.

Since there are no weather changes in the backyard while playing Grounded, players don’t need to worry about putting a roof over their heads if they don’t want to. Instead, they can just expand their area across the whole of the lily pads for plenty of safe spots.

2Log Fence

Near the Oak Tree is a row of logs creating a barrier along the roses, as well as one near an outpost. These are fantastic spots to build a base. It’s almost dead center in the yard and can traverse most areas of the yard easily.

On top of being an amazing central location with good access to many materials, building on top of the logs is a natural defense against many enemies in this area. It also prevents most raids from attacking you.

The great thing about games like Grounded is the ability to use your imagination. If raids aren’t enabled, or even if you just don’t mind building intense defensive structures, protection doesn’t need to be a priority. If aesthetics and large workshops aren’t needed because you’re constantly on the go, make small outposts everywhere.

There is no one spot that fits all locations in Grounded, and there shouldn’t be. Players survive the yard in very different ways, and that is what the game is for - Creating your own fun in your own way. Go Build!
