But few know the mastermind behind this epic saga – George R.R. Martin, the renowned author of theA Song of Ice and Firebook series.

In an interview from 2017, Martin shared his creative process, offering a glimpse into the mind of the genius who brought Westeros to life. When asked about his approach to plotting, Martin revealed that while he has the overall story arc planned, he leaves room for improvisation and flexibility. The writer acknowledged that this way might not work for others but it worked for him.

In a 2017interview with TIME magazine, Martin spoke about several aspects of writing and the techniques he used. TheDunk & Eggwriter mentioned one creative process that was not as popular among others but worked well for him.

I know where I’m starting from, I know where I want to end up, more or less. I know some of the big turning points along the way, the stuff I’m building for, but you discover an awful lot along the way.
Speaking of improvisation, the author said while he had the bigger chunks of the storyline figured out others came to him as he wrote. The series featured an elaborate world, multiple characters, and storylines so it comes as no surprise that some things got improvised.

There’s always that process of discovery for me. I know not all writers work that way, but it’s always been the way I work.

Although Martin was the creator, his characters often turned out to be the ones at the helm. He mentioned several instances when a character he designed as non-significant developed into having a major role while writing.
A Song of Ice and Fire: The story that started it all
The interview also delved into Martin’s involvement in the TV show, which concluded its finale in 2019. The author mentioned he started the series back in 1991, way before he even met the showrunners.
You have to remember that I started writing this story in 1991 and I first met David and Dan [showrunners Benioff and Weiss] in 2007.

He then acknowledged his participation in the plot of the show but emphasized the books. The writer said he predominantly focused on the text because the show had a mind of its own.

The show is the show and it’s developed a life of its own at this point. I am involved in the show, of course, and have been since the beginning, but my main focus has got to be the books.
While the show’s ending received mixed reviews, fans of the books eagerly await Martin’s conclusion to the series. Unfortunately, there have been no updates on the confirmed release date for the next book,The Winds of Winter.
