The story ofElden Ringis frequently credited to two individuals: George R.R. Martin, author ofA Song of Ice and Fire, and Hidetaka Miyazaki, president and creative director of FromSoftware. So, what exactly did Martin do withElden Ring?

TheGame of Thronesfamed writer actually helped Miyazaki in contributing worldbuilding for the popular game. Now, you might wonder why the award-winning TV series author suddenly shifted his focus towards video games. Actually, GRRM’s profound love for video games takes us back to the 80s.
George R. R. Martin would have written“a novel or two”if it wasn’t for the video games
GRRM isn’t just a legendary writer; he is an avid gamer as well, like all of us. In an interview withThe Escapist, he stated that video games are not really his thing. But he didn’t forget to mention that he used to play a lot of strategy games likeRailroad Tycoon,Romance of the Three Kingdoms, andMaster of Orionback in the“dawn of time.”He also acknowledged that he would tryElden Ringas well because that offer was“too exciting to refuse.”

This wasn’t the real portrayal of his dedication to video games. Back in 2013, in an interview withVerge, GRRM stated that his obsession with video games in the 1980s might have caused him“a novel or two.”However, he also said he didn’t pay much attention to the games based on hisA Song of Ice and Fireseries, the basis forGame of Thrones. In his words:
I played a few video games back in the 80s and it wasn’t that I didn’t like them. It was that I liked them too much. And I think I probably lost a novel or two there, cause I would get hooked on something and I would be playing it over and over again, and I would be staying up all night. Just one more game, just one more game. So, video games can be very addictive.

Although he didn’t mention which games he was“hooked”to in the 1980s. However, it’s pretty good that at least he has left his obsession now, otherwise, there would be even less chance that he would ever finishA Song of Ice and Fire.Since the last book was published (in 2011), it has been so long that fans of the book series and television showtake it for granted and it is no longer just an inside jokein the ASOIAF community.
George R.R. Martin will play no role in makingElden Ring: Nightreign
Theannouncement ofElden Ring: Nightreignwas one of the biggest surprisesat The Game Awards 2024, but it was later confirmed that George R.R. Martin would not be involved in the project’s development, which was an even bigger surprise.
Following the announcement ofElden Ring: Nightreign, game director Junya Ishizaki spoke withIGNabout a number of multiplayer-related details. Following Ishizaki’s confirmation thatNightreign‘s story would be entirely independentbut coexist with the story of the base game, he also disclosed that George R.R. Martin had no say in the plot or setting of the spin-off.

Martin was also not involved in the development ofShadow of the Erdtree, even though the DLC was based on the author’s lore from the original game. According to Ishizaki, FromSoftware didn’t want to interfere with fans’ emotional attachment to the main plot and instead aimed to develop a“wholly separate branch of the Elden Ring story.”
Martin contributed most of the world-building forElden Ring, especially the events that took place prior to the main plot of the base game, despite the fact that fantasy fans are vying for his services for the completion ofGame of Thrones’The Winds of Winterbook. Furthermore, the author may return to oversee theElden Ringlive-action adaptation, which George R.R. Martin previously discussed, much like he did with theHouse of the Dragonseries.
