If you thought that Fern, as they said, is the most capable mage inFrieren: Beyond Journey’s End, then think again! While indeed Fern had her own moments where she shone brightly, there were a lot of moments where she didn’t stand out as a First Class Mage at all; she was more like a supporting character in those scenes.

In fact, she COULD BE the most capable one unless there was another mage who also participated in the exam. The real unsung hero of the First-Class Mage Exam was none other than Land! While his cloning skills indeed stole the show, that’s not the only thing that earns him this much praise!

What made Land more capable than any other mage in theFirst-Class Mage Exam

Land was indeed the real MVP ofthe First-Class Mage Exam, as he clearly surpassed Fern and the rest of the competition with little to no effort. By doing so, he even proved himself to be the smartest, most experienced mage in the room, despite his young age. But how exactly?

Land’s cloning magic is absurdly distinctive and needs immense skill to master. Yet, during the test, he didn’t even break into a sweat, instead, he kept sending his clones to get all the exam-related job done.

And for all this effortlessness, it almost seemed like he was trolling the entire exam, which is particularly badass to even think about. Some fans are even jealous of him, saying:

Land’s carefree approach to arguably the toughest mage exam was truly something to take note of. However, there was one moment that pretty much shocked him to death, when Serie noticed his trickery during the final exam. Land thought that if even Frieren and others couldn’t tell,he could trick everyone by staying in his hometownand sending a clone to take the exam for him.

Land was so confident that he even thought Serie would not notice his trickery!

From the very get-go, Land was portrayed as a stoic and emotionless character, however, when Serie let him know that he knew of Land’s cloning tricks, his reaction was not exactly what one would expect. One might argue that being a good mage, Land should have knownthe near-omnipotence of Serie.

But it also proves how confident he was in his abilities. Given his stoic personality, it’s understandable that Land was surprised when Serie figured him out, even if it wasn’t logical to think he could deceive “The Living Grimoire”!

Through this whole interaction of Land and Serie during the final exam, fans could grasp the scale of Land’s true power, and if in the future he manages to use his abilities more efficiently then it’s over for everyone. It might be too soon but given how the First Class Mage Exam arc went on in the first season ofFrieren: Beyond Journey’s End, it’s safe to say that among his peers Land is arguably more capable than any other mage as of now.
