One of the most discussed archetypes in theFire Emblemseries is the Trainee. Typically characterized by their low level and base stats, these units have potential that, if nurtured, can allow them to outshine any other unit. The difficult part is reaching that point. While Trainees often have great potential, whether they are worth the investment to reach their peak is oft up for debate. It takes a skilled hand to whittle enemies low enough to a point where the weak Trainee can snag that all-important XP, all while keeping them out of harm’s way.

InFire Emblem: Engage, you are presented with Jean, a trainee who is both simple to use, and uniquely versatile. Jean joins your army in the Paralogue “Budding Talent”, deciding that the best way to help the people of Firene is to help take down the Fell Dragon that’s causing the destruction. Here are a few ways to make the best of Jean’s talents, and nurture the young doctor into a powerful warrior.

Growth Rates

The main draw behind a Trainee is their crazy growth rates, right? So why, you may ask, do Jean’s growths look so average? This is because Jean works differently from other units in his archetype. His potential lies in his personal skill, Expertise, whichdoubles the growth rates provided by his class. So instead of the +25% that other Martial Monks would receive, Jean is working with a total of 70% Magic growth. Therefore, though his own growths are quite average, this is by design. They are only meant to be a stable base that his class’s growth will further augment. With this in mind, Jean’s stats are extremely customizable, based on the role you require him to fill. An important thing to keep in mind, however, is his frustratingly low base Build, which could possibly hamper his weapon choices.

Best Classes

As mentioned above, Jean canutilize a great variety of classesdue to his personal skill, but a good place to start is his base Martial Monk. The promoted version, Martial Master, provides Jean with an impressive variety of growths, including both Strength and Magic, making him one of the few characters that can effectively utilize Arts. The downside to this option, however, is the complete lack of Dexterity or Speed growth. While Jean’s base growths in these stats are far from the worst out there, they will certainly leave much to be desired without investment. If you intend to use a build other than his base class, a good place to start would be reclassing into an Axe Fighter.

This will leave Jean with extra growth in Strength, Dexterity, Speed, and most importantly, Build. After a good few level-ups in this class, he should be able to snag a few extra build points to support his low base. After such training, he should look to reclass into Wyvern, Griffin, or Wolf Knight for a final class. These will all provide the important Speed and Dexterity, alongside better movement, and a variety of weapon choices. Jean is an incredibly versatile unit to build, so you should absolutely spend some time mapping out your plans for him and come up with how to best fit him into your team.

Best Weapons

Recommending weapons for Jean is an unusually difficult task. As mentioned above, his options for classes are as varied as they can be, so his weapon choices will change depending on your build path. Regardless of class, you should make sure to stick with lighter weapons, as Jean’s low Build is his biggest obstacle. Engravings that lower a weapon’s weight should also be considered, especially if raising an Axe Fighter, as without such measures he will struggle to wield Axes without penalty.

Best Emblem Rings

As with weapons, Jean’sideal Emblem Ring partnerswill vary based on your preferred class choices. For a healer build, Micaiah or Byleth provide the best combination of utility and combat stats, with Great Sacrifice and Goddess Dance allowing Jean to change the tide of battle in a single move. Sigurd and Lyn provide excellent stats for a Speed focused build, allowing for extra safety and damage, as well as powerful Engage Weapons. Finally, Leif allows Jean some leniency in weapon choice with a large boost to Build.

Best Skills

You should customize Jean’s skills based on your choice of class, but here are some generally powerful options. Canter provides valuable positioning, allowing you to play safely even when on the offense. Mentorship provides a boost to XP gain, especially valuable for a growth focus unit such as Jean. For a Speed-focused build, you should consider Speedtaker or Alacrity, while a healer would appreciate Healing Light.
