While theFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketrilogy of games is technically one big game split into smaller chunks, players might have noticed how the developers have made certain changes from game to game.
Rather than developing the saga as a whole, Square Enix opted to release each chapter separately, which has resulted in the developers having different inspirations for each project.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Draws Inspiration From The Witcher 3
In the latest issue of Edge magazine (viaGamesRadar), game director Naoki Hamaguchi mentioned how in the first game (Final Fantasy 7 Remake), their main inspiration was The Last of Us, God of War, and even Uncharted – games that are cinematic experiences, but quite linear.
However, that changed forFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which has a more open-world setting. For the second chapter of the RPG, Hamaguchi turned to open-world hits such as CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Guerrilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn to see how the two games' developers built their sprawling open worlds. “Then we looked to recreate the same kinds of experiences and systems that we had in the 1997 game, but with this more modern edge,” Hamaguchi notes.

Those are excellent open-world games to draw inspiration from, in my opinion.

For those unaware, Rebirth’s move to a more open-world setting isn’t just Square Enix shoehorning it in to claim they made changes to the game’s formula. Even in the original version of the RPG released in 1997, the section on which Rebirth is based was more wide-open, allowing players to navigate the area more freely than the first game, which mainly focused on Midgar.

While there’s no date yet for the final chapter,Square Enix did confirm that its story has been finalizedand that the developers have entered full production. So far, gameplay details for it are scant, but we do know that the concluding game in the remake trilogy will once again feature mini games, but the developers are looking to add a “different twist"this time around.
Hopefully, we’ll get a release date for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 sometime in 2025, and who knows? We might even see it on a console without the PlayStation brand. Hamaguchihas publicly saidthat he wants to see the game appear on other platforms, and yes, it includes Microsoft’s Xbox console.

If you’ve yet to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you might want to remedy that. Not only did it score quite well inour review, where it was tagged as “one of the best games you’ll play in 2024,” but iteven got nominatedfor Game of the Year for The Game Awards, which is taking place this week.
