Samuel L. Jackson played Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the post-credits scene of 2008’sIron Man. Since then, he became a staple figure across several MCU instalments and created history as one of the most iconic characters on screen.

Fury was meant to make his way into the theaters in 2007’sFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but there was a complication in the business side of things. The late Andre Braugher was supposed to play the role, but he ended up becoming General Hager, Fox’s version of Fury.
Andre Braugher almost played Nick Fury inRise of the Silver Surfer
Andre Braugherwas famously known for his roles as Captain Raymond Holt inBrooklyn Nine-Nineand as Detective Frank Pembleton inHomicide: Life on the Street. Not many know his stint as General Hager in Fox’sFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

In the DVD commentary by directorTim Story, he shared that Nick Fury was supposed to appear in the movie. Fox had no rights to the character, so they tried to negotiate with Marvel. Apparently, the price was out of the studio’s budget, and the latter seemingly had plans to debut Fury in their own project. Left with only one option, Fox created the character of General Hager in lieu of the famed spy.
Despite appearing in the film with a different name, Braugher managed to channel Fury in several ways possible. In fact, one of his dialogues with Mr. Fantastic was taken from a conversation Reed Richards and Nick Fury had inUltimate Extinction #2. When a mysterious anomaly penetrated the Earth, he contacted Richards, who was a former schoolmate.

They didn’t get along very well, which is the same dynamics that Richards and Fury had in the comics. It’s surprising that we almost had Braugher as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a year before the MCU kicked off and beforeSamuel L. Jackson’s version. While the latter played the role wonderfully, it’s still intriguing to see Braugher’s take on the part, and we’re certain that he would have given an equally exceptional portrayal of Fury.

Fury’s participation in the upcoming film would be very crucial because he was involved in the discovery of the First Family. It only makes sense if he would be there, but since this is only a report from a scooper, we need to take this with a grain of salt.
