For a novel that has been claimed difficult to adapt in a live-action setting, Netflix proved that time solves everything – at least with how they handled Gabriel García Márquez’sOne Hundred Years of Solitude. Many Hollywood filmmakers have attempted to translate the 1967 Nobel Prize-winning story to the screen, but it was only today that an adaptation has been successfully made.

Part of the reason the author had firmly refused to make a movie or show out of his work was because he believed the beautiful and enchanting town of Macondo could never be rendered onscreen. Finally, Netflix made it possible.

Netflix brings a realistic approach toOne Hundred Years of Solitude

The setting for Netflix’sOne Hundred Years of Solitudestood in a field outside the city of Ibagué where they built a tangible production from the ground up. In plain speaking, everything that the viewers see on the screen is real. A huge part of the story was magical realism, an element that Gabriel García Márquez had issues with when it comes to Hollywood adaptations.

In truth, magical realism is difficult to execute without the help of visual effects, but times have changed now, and Netflix has the equipment to make the scenes look realistic with a little help from practical effects.

Co-director Laura Mora said via theNew York Timesthat they shot the scenes involving magical realism without the aid of visual effects. They wanted to make it look grounded and real as much as possible. “That had to do with a formal decision on our part. Everything has to feel very homemade, very analog, very, very on-camera,” she explained.

One great example would be the scene with a ghost. Most shows would depict apparitions as translucent and even floating, but for this one, the phantom is in his physical form. Some sequences that required levitation were performed with harnesses that were removed in the editing room, and for the scene that exhibited flowers raining from the sky – thousands of real flowers really did fall from above.

They believed that this kind of setting would not only make it more convincing for the viewers but for the actors as well. They didn’t have to imagine things anymore because everything was tangible, and they were all equally astonished by how real the town of Macondo looked.

It truly took flesh, blood, and sweat to build the fictional town of Macondo, as well as the home of the Buendía family inside a hangar. The pressure must have been very real since there was so much expectation from the audience as well as from García Márquez’s family.

One Hundred Years of Solitudeis currently available to watch on Netflix.
