As you may have noticed, success stories in Hollywood casting calls often follow a similar pattern. Aspiring actors work extremely hard to get the chance to show the bigwigs in the business how valuable they are. However, there are very few situations in which even well-known talents are reluctant to take the risk. Emily Blunt’s audition with Paweł Pawlikowski went something like this.

Matt Damon’s Oppenheimer co-star Emily Blunt

She played the role of Tamsin in the first debut feature film,My Summer of Love, which was certainly ahead of its time. Why? The film, in which she starred with Natalie Press, explored the romantic relationship between two young women from disparate social classes and backgrounds. But the audition was nothing like ordinary for the London-born actress. To give her audition, which Blunt found“embarrassing” & “terrifying”, she had to be dragged to the Oscar-winning director’s office.

Emily Blunt’s Audition For This Film Was Nothing Like Ordinary

Elegant, poised, and sharply funny,Emily Bluntexudes all three. For years, audiences have been enthralled with her acting performances—fromMy Summer of Love, where she played an extroverted and anxious upper-middle-class character, toOppenheimer, where she portrayed a quiet and determined woman.

However, Paweł Pawlikowski’s British drama filmMy Summer of Love, which she starred in, was her first R-rated role as Tamsin. The project, which also starredNatalie Press, told the tale of two very different young girls who become friends. Since it was Blunt’s first full-length feature film, the experience influenced her eventual development as an actor and film star.

My Summer of Love

She recently related her awful audition story onThe Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast:

“Well, I just was nervous, cuz I was aware that it was going to be an improvised audition…So I was nervous and it was with the great Paweł Pawlikowski, who we all know and sort of worshiped. He was wonderful but I remember that audition. We were sitting by a window sill ‘I’m gonna do it very bad’. Pawel was like, ‘Okay, so you’re going to look out the window and you see your dad and he’s like… having s*x with his secretary. And I would like freak and get very very mad, upset, cry and then left. Pretend the whole thing is a joke, okay? Go!’ And I was like… What? It was so terrifying!”

Blunt also remembered how “so embarrassing” the audition had been:

“And I remember leaving that audition and calling my agent going ‘That was so embarrassing, I never wanna do that again! And then he [Pawel] called me and said, ‘Come meet Natalie [Press]’ and that was it, it was done.”

Well, the film was well-received and showcased Blunt’s versatility as a multi-layered, highly nuanced actor. She thus, remarkably, made her film debut as a sly private schoolgirl who strikes up a summertime romance with a working-class girl.

Emily Blunt:My Summer of LoveWas a ‘Weird Little’ Film

Emily Blunt gained significant attention after her appearance in Pawel Pawlikowski’sMy Summer of Love. Her first feature-length film helped to mold her into the actor and movie star she would eventually become. So, she might have only good things to say about this time. Well, she previously discussed it in an interview withVulture:

“It was such a weird little film, but the one where I learned the most because I hadn’t trained at all.”

But during auditions, things were rarely as smooth as they seemed. Blunt originally thought she did not make a strong enough impression to get the role. According toBluntforce, she once admitted:

“I’d never done any improvisation before, and I didn’t know what to expect. My agent just said just go in, you’re gonna improv a few scenes. I went in, and Pawel was there… Then I just did it with the casting director, and he stopped me a few times and we tried something else. I thought I was rubbish.”

Blunt landed roles in the mystery dramaIrresistibleand the comedy-dramaThe Devil Wears Pradaafter the early success ofMy Summer of Love. The actress has gained a lot of attention lately for her role as Katherine Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimer(2023).
