A new report by Cecilia D’Anastasio and Takashi Mochizuki at Bloomberg sheds light on testimonies from 18 current and former Crunchyroll employees, uncovering tensions between Crunchyroll and Funimation staff, dissatisfaction with management, and concerns over layoffs.

The report also highlights strained relationships with licensors, such as Toei Animation, Shogakukan, Shueisha, and Kodansha. ForDandadanfans, this tension notably includes one of its licensors and production companies, Toho.
AlthoughDandadanwas one of the most anticipated titles of the year, new testimony claims that Crunchyroll’s senior vice president, Markus Gerdemann, directly told staff to scale back its promotion.

Gerdemann explained in an email, obtained byBloomberg, that they would not be promotingDandadan. The email read:
Due to ongoing acquisition discussions, we decided not to further lean into the promotion of Dandadan.
It’s unconfirmed what specific “acquisitions discussions” led to this. However,Dandadanwas simulcast on both Crunchyroll and Netflix despite many anime being platform-exclusive.
