Dragon’s Dogma 2has made a big splash since release, and it’s no surprise. The gameabsolutely nails what makes the open-world Fantasy genre so satisfying. Unfortunately, it’s also suffering from some performance issues and (truly unnecessary) microtransactions. However, I can personally say that my experience on the PS5 has been just about flawless. While there’s a lot to love about this game, the large enemies and unique combat surrounding them is one of my favorite parts.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Review: Cryptic & Unforgettable
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an open-world Fantasy adventure you can’t afford to miss.
That Old Saying: The Bigger They Are…
Many games with large enemies are happy to have players stab at a creature’s feet until their health bar is sufficiently depleted. Not Dragon’s Dogma 2. Every large enemy has weakpoints spread throughout their body, and you’ll be greatly rewarded for exploiting these. This mean you,and your Pawns, can climb up and start attacking these creatures where you’ll hurt them most. However, don’t expect these monsters to go down without a fight. They know your tricks. They’ll try to throw you off, grab you, slam you against walls, and generally do anything they can to get this pesky thing off of them.
My team barely scraped by, and when we did, we were in desperate need of a camp.

If you manage to knock them off balance, they’ll even stumble to the ground (or off a cliff). When they’re down, this is a prime time to get on top of them and dish out some major damage.
Fighting these large monsters is a cinematic experience, and has led to some of the most memorable moments I’ve had while gaming. What makes these moments so precious is that they’re unscripted. At one point, I stumbled upon a Cyclops in the dead of night. Unfortunately, as he rampaged around, he threw me into a horde of goblins. It felt like I was in Lord of the Rings, fighting through the mines of Moria. Goblins were everywhere, the darkness was confusing, and this Cyclops presented a major problem as it knocked me and the goblins aside in equal measure.

I climbed atop the Cyclops' head and dealt a crushing blow. I was thrown to the ground as the beast fell, but that just meant I was now free to deal with the goblins. The fight continued for several minutes. My team barely scraped by, and when we did, we were in desperate need of a camp.
An Impressive Variety Of Foes
When it comes to large enemies, you can face the Cyclops, Ogre, Minotaur, Griffin, Chimera, Medusa, Drakes, and some other bosses I won’t spoil here. While it would’ve been enough to leave the variety at that, the developers also created variations within each of these monsters. The first time I came across an armored Cyclops was a real head-turner. The usual weakpoints weren’t there, so I had to change my tactics. I eventually figured out that I could strip away some of this armor with targeted strikes, allowing me to exploit those weakpoints once again.
The variety among these monsters and their variants will constantly keep you on your toes. In fact, I often had atough time choosing between Vocations, because they each have their own perks when fighting these behemoths. Fortunately, you can swap Vocations on the fly, so try everything and find your perfect fit.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Player Uses Troll As A Bridge, Dubs It Game Of The Year
According to one player, Dragon’s Dogma 2’s troll scene takes centre stage in making this game worthy of Game of the Year
A Game That Rewards Getting Creative
When it comes to Dragon’s Dogma 2, you’ll almost always be rewarded for creativity. Having trouble reaching a chest yourself, see if you may throw a Pawn up to it. Fighting a large enemy with too much health? Maybe you can trip them off a cliff or shove them into deadly water. Need to dodge an attack? Try using one of your attacks for evasion instead of offense. Our very own Rachael Fiddis recently reported on a player who used a troll as a bridge. It’s a great article, which I’ve linked above.
Players have even discovered that you’re able to ride on top of a Griffin. Hold on long enough, and it may even take you back to its nest. It’s a dangerous ride, but it’s totally worth it just for the epic story. There’s nothing quite like flying high into the air, wind rushing around you, knowing that the fall will definitely end your trip really quickly. It’s a thrill. Even though I’ve mostly died during these adventures, I had a great time doing it. So, when you’re fighting large enemies, be sure to experiment. Don’t be satisfied chipping away at their health. Push them around, ride them like a mechanical bull, and experience all of the wild mechanics this game has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.
