An incredibly talented hardware engineer and software programmerFoone Turinghas taken the often tongue-in-cheek “but can it runDoom?” challenge to new heights. Recently they posted several videos on their Twitter account showcasing a real technological wonder they created: videos actually running on a pregnancy tester of all things, includingDoomitself:

It’s pretty incredible seeing even that level being run on a tester and foone does imply that their tinkering isn’t finished yet, since they plan on having the entire setup fit inside the tester. Meaning someday we may have a pregnancy tester that can run the full game. Currently, this is the setup they use to run all of these videos:

According to their accompanying status update: “The existing CPU can’t be reprogrammed and the existing LCD can only show 4 things, so I had to replace both to make any changes. And the current version doesn’t even fit into the shell! (although I’m certain it will when complete).” Foone has also stated that once the design is complete, they’ll post a how-to guide so others can make their very own video pregnancy test.

They also have the video ofDoomrunning availablehereto watch, which features the best quality compared to Twitter infamous video compression, as well asthe full libraryof other videos they’ve gotten running on the above setup. And if you want to support them here are links to theirPatreonandko-fipages.

This is hardly the first crazy thing done withDoom, even officially or by third parties. Developer id Softwarereleased a new patch last monthforDOOM EternalÂthat included a variety of different Render Modes which gives the game drastically different looks, depending on which you choose to implement. One of these is “Retro Handheld” which resembles the original Game Boy’s iconic green color palette.

On the completely opposite end of the graphical spectrum is Nvidia’s ownrecent video demonstrationof their RTX 3080, which showed offDOOM Eternal. The video shows comparisons between the RTX 3080 and what was previously considered one of Nvidia’s most powerful cards in the RTX 2080 Ti. Running at max settings,DOOM Eternalis able to consistently net between 100-130fps during combat while running at a 4K resolution.

Check out our review of the original DOOM Eternalhere, which according to the piece “is a drastic improvement over its predecessor in every way and sees the Doom Slayer reclaiming his throne in the shooter genre.”
