Don’t Call It Mystery (ミステリと言う勿れ), based on the manga of the same name isgetting a film adaptation this fall. The manga that was written and illustrated by Yumi Tamura has been serialized in Shogakukan’s manga magazine Monthly Flowers since November 2017.

The TV live-action adaptation of the manga launched on Fuji TV from January to March 2022.Like the manga, the adaptation follows college student Totonou Kunou. One morning, police officers show up at Totonou’s door and ask him about his whereabouts the night before. It turns out that one of his classmates was found dead near his home, and he’s taken into custody as a suspect. When he’s placed at the scene of the crime, Totonou stays in custody longer than he hoped despite his claims of innocence.

The longer Totonou is in custody, the police begin to realize that he isn’t your run-of-the-mill college student and is more observant than most people. As the evidence piles up against him, Totonou uses his skills to solve the mystery behind his classmate’s death.

After the ending of the TV series, fans were hopeful for a sequel, and they’re getting one. Based on volumes two through four of the manga series, the film will follow Totonou as he visits Hiroshima, where he gets caught up in another mystery. The original 2022 live-action TV series can be streamed on Rakuten Viki where it has an overall rating of 9.6/10 stars. Although there is no official date for when the film will air besides “this fall,” it will almost certainly air in Japan first. However, like the series, it should make its way to international screens not too long after the release.

The manga chapters of Don’t Call It Mystery, initially stylized as Do Not Say Mystery in English, have been compiled into tankōbon novels since January 2018. Currently, eleven volumes have been released. The English publication of the series was announced at Anime Expo 2022, and the first two volumes will be released on May 30 by Seven Seas Entertainment. The series was nominated for the 44th Kodansha Manga Award in the General category in 2020, and again for the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award in 2022. If the awards don’t pique your interest in this series, maybe the fact that it’s also been published in French since May 2021 will.
