The second episode ofDemon Slayerseason 4, which was released on June 27, 2025, has finally revealed the reason behind Giyu Tomioka’s loneliness and sadness. Not only that, it gave a glimpse into the past of the Water Hashira and his struggles. The episode also explored the link between Giyu and Sabito, who was actually his childhood friend.

Sabito was first introduced in the story when Tanjiro was training for the final selection exam of theDemon SlayerCorps. His spirit form helped Tanjiro slice the giant boulder in half by guiding him and explaining to him the basics of sword skills. In a way, he was indirectly responsible for Tanjiro being able to pass the final selection exam.
Sabito was an extremely impactful character, and his return to the story once again after so many seasons proves it. The episode displayed Sabito’s character, his personality, his reason for joining theDemon SlayerCorps, and also his death.

Demon SlayerSeason 4 Brought Sabito Back
The second episode ofDemon Slayerseason 2, titled “The Sorrows of the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka,” started with Kagaya Ubuyashiki sending a letter to Tanjiro and asking him to convince Giyu Tomioka to teach his methods to other Demon Slayers. Tanjiro accepts this mission, reaches Giyu’s residence, and nags him unintentionally until he explains why he prefers to stay alone.

Thinking that Tanjiro would leave if Giyu told him the truth, the Water Hashira talks about his past and claims that he does not deserve the title because he was not able to pass the exam. He then unveils his past in front of Tanjiro and tells him about his friendship with Sabito.
Giyu also talked about how Sabito was much more deserving of being aDemon Slayerthan him. He explained that Sabito was much stronger than him and cared about others a lot. They both entered the final selection exam together, and Sabito killed almost every demon while Giyu got injured rather quickly. However, Sabito, while trying to save another contender from the clutches of the morphed demons, lost his life.

Sabito’s Importance in Giyu’s Life
Sabito and Giyu both lost their families during the invasion of demons, and they met each other while training under Sakonji Urokodaki. They immediately became good friends and trained together, but Sabito was more skilled than Giyu. Their friendship was the reason why Sabito’s death had such an impact on Giyu’s life that he had apersonality change and became a loner.
Giyu believed that he could not even defeat a single demon and was only able to survive the exam because of Sabito. This is why, after his death, he trained hard and mastered Water Breathing. The episode showed that even after his death, Sabito continued to motivate Giyu to become strong.

During the conclusion of the episode, Tanjiro made Giyu realize that while he was dying, Sabito entrusted him with the responsibility of removing the demons from the face of the earth instead of sitting behind and moping. Thus, Giyu agreed to train the other subordinates, along with Tanjiro, for the final battle.
