However, one might find it quite surprising, that despiteDandadan’srecord-breaking success, its reach was fairly hindered by Crunchyroll’s one questionable decision. So what could have actually happened? CouldDandadanhave done better, or is it just because of some internal politics?

Crunchyroll took drastic measures in an attempt to jeopardize Netflix’s increase in popularity!

Recently, Crunchyroll has been met with much controversy for several reasons.A stunning report has shownthat this anime streaming giant deliberately tried to sabotage Netflix’s growing popularity, and at the center of this strategy wasDandadan. In fact, Crunchyroll deliberately chose to limit promotions for this show to get back at Netflix.

What we got to know from the reports, is that Markus Gerdemann, the senior vice president of marketing at Crunchyroll, emailed the Crunchyroll staff in October and instructed them to reduce the promotions ofDandadansince the acquisition discussions were still ongoing. The email mentioned,

Jiji and Okarun

not to further lean into the promotion of Dandadan..

Because ofDandadan’sremarkable debut as the second-most-viewed non-English title on Netflix, fans and critics alike are taking this matter quite seriously.

The decision to intentionally cut offDandadan’spromotion is likely to have derailed some of the series’ potential viewership and popularity. Nowthe company’s management style and strategic focuswill be forced to put under further analysis, as Gerdemann’s job might just be gone for good.

Netflix on the other hand benefitted from this incident

Ironically, Crunchyroll ended up giving Netflix an upper hand in the anime market because of this action. Crunchyroll did not foresee the possibility ofDandadangetting so popular that fans would go anywhere just to watch the show. So as the only option, peoplepicked up Netflix over Crunchyroll.

Netflix’s strategic licensing of popular titles such asDelicious in DungeonandLittle Witch Academia, has already captured the anime streaming space, leaving behind its competitors. Now Crunchyroll finds itself struggling to gain an edge in this context.

The aftermath ofCrunchyroll’s decisionhas set Netflix as the premier service for anime fans. While Netflix is solidifying its market lead, Crunchyroll’s pullback in promotingDandadanhas backfired its own reputation. With Netflix’s anime content pulling in fans, Crunchyroll’s market share and influence will most likely continue to decrease.
