Action-strategy is a newer concept for the team at Mojang, the studio known for bringing us open-world builderMinecraft, but that’s just when we’ll get when the company releasesMinecraft Legendsfor a planned date of spring 2023.
Speaking at theMinecraft Live2022 event on October 15, Creative Director Magnus Nedfors and Narrative Director Kevin Grace talked about the spirit of Minecraft and what their team kept and changed from the vanilla base game to offer players a new experience while still honoring the formula loved by fans around the world.

“In Minecraft, it’s all about the stories that you make” Grace said, explaining that when they first introduced the concept for the game, they did so with a cinematic of a villager reading a story to a child. That’s the basis for Minecraft Heroes to which he feels everyone can relate — having someone tell you a fantastical story and wishing for it to be true.
While Minecraft has always been player-driven, it allows for creativity and theater of the mind to tell the stories hiding behind the blocky graphics, and Grace said that sort of personalized, story-based mechanic will bleed over into Minecraft Legends. He explains, “It’s those kind of legendary what-ifs that we’re going to add in Minecraft Legends for you to put into your next Minecraft story.” Also, like the original Minecraft, Minecraft Legends will take place in a randomly generated world, so each player’s experence will be different.
As for gameplay, both creative leads described the game’s setting, saying the overworld will be overrun with various tribes of piglins, which will all behave differently. to combat them, the player, taking on the role of the hero, will unite various mobs into an army, collecting, building, and engaging in direct combat against each piglin tribe. The hero, Nedfors explained, will be where the action part of the action-strategy comes in, as players will be able to swing their swords, run and jump across biomes, and defend their friends against the piglins' attacks.
“When you have a hero, you want that hero to able to do some stuff right? That’s where the action combination comes in,” he said.
But the core of the gameplay will be centered around the use of three hero tools. The Flame of Creation will activate spawners, which will spawn friendly units to aid the hero in combat. The Banner of Courage will rally friends found around the map and allow you to issue them commands. And the Lute, when played, will cause Allays to deconstruct objects in the overworld for resource gathering or construct helpful structures like arrow towers to help fight the piglins.
Grace also spoke of the cuteness factor of the friends who will aid the hero, which range from old standards like llamas, foxes, and creepers, to new additions like the regal tiger, a purple and white tiger mount that will carry the hero across the overworld. “There’s a lot of mobs that will show up and be very curious about the players” he said.
The creators noted there will be more information released on the game in the coming months prior to its release next spring.
